Accidentally realized I am a James Barton Longacre fan. He was Chief Engraver for the US Mint from 1844-69. I think I should aim for a type collection.

If you are gonna do that, I would suggest going for the highest grade you can afford.
Don't settle for worn coins. It will likely take longer and certainly cost more,
but in the long run the result will be much more satisfying. Good luck ~

Nice collection. James Barton Longacre sure did a much better job than Charles Barber did............

@Marv65
I agree, Barber's designs had a gaudy and frumpy look to them, which admittedly was a trend in the 1890s. Whereas Longacre's designs are subtle and balanced, he clearly had great talent in designing wreaths.

Good advice. It seems the hardest one is will be the Silver Three-Cent and the Flying Eagle. Even here in Canada, most dealers have a couple of each floating around; but the Trimes are always either bent, worn-to-death, and/or holed. While the Flying cents are always corroded.

That would be a nice type coin set to put together. Best of wishes with the hunt.

This is neat. I have had a cynical view that Longacre designed several coins in odd denominations because he wanted to do something that was new with his creative impulses. Gobrecht and Gobrecht/Hughes had the silver and gold coinage fields pretty much to themselves for most of the Nineteenth Century, and there were no commemoratives to design. I do have to admit that Mr. Longacre made assembling a Nineteenth Century type set more interesting and challenging. I still don't have any trimes.
