I disagree with you that "the vast majority of people today are cashless."

Yes, people (including me) use cards much of the time at the register or online, but I still pay for things in cash. I see other people pay in cash. I see people at the bank receive cash. Vast numbers of people still use cash.

BTW--the penny is not done. It will still be minted for proof and mint sets. And saying that the nickel will be next is pure speculation. I've yet to hear anything about that from anyone in control of our money.

As far as the future of coin collecting goes, I think it will be okay. Kids will be disappointed that the lack of penny to collect out circulation every year means one less coin to collect. But they will still have the nickel, dime and quarter. The constant change in the quarter's reverse means more folder holes to fill. So I think coin collecting will continue, though without the penny it won't be as accessible or exciting.

P.S. I still use cash mainly because I still collect coins out of circulation and I still have folder holes to fill. It's as much fun for me to fill a hole out of circulation as it was when I started in 1971.

I don't even think that will happen. The cent isn't being demonetized, we simply have sufficient supply. The banks around here are starting to refuse wrapped cents because their vaults are full, so they would probably happily sell cent rolls to kids.
