Maximianus and Diocletian

The-Curious-Case-Of-Two-Very-'Odd'-Tetrarchy-Folles-.

A rather handsome Maximianus too !
24-26mm 11.71 grams
For all the world it looks like the work of the London mint !
I have added more than a few after 50 years ..
The-Curious-Case-Of-Two-Very-'Odd'-Tetrarchy-Folles-.
But the reverse indicates Ticinum ?
Trouble is I don't believe Ticinum issued cuirassed bust folles
It looks official . I think ?
Opinions ?

Next comes Diocletian .
But I've never seen another like it
12.81 grams 28-29mm
Judging by the color and diameter I am guessing it was minted on an earlier copper As
Possibly first century ?
Again the portrait style does seem to point at London
The reverse does not ..
I am sure the "experts" at NGC would dismiss it as being simply 'unofficial'
But the portrait is not unskilled nor is the legend blundered
But again we have a cuirassed bust where none were issued ?
Curiouser and curiouser

Opinions welcomed !

I have no doubt that they are unofficial. Ticinum does have some laureate and cuirassed busts, but they are scarce and much nicer in style. Just because a coin is unofficial doesn't mean that it has to be poorly engraved though. Some of those engravers may have even been actual mint employees involved in moonlighting. At some point, an unofficial coin might not even be able to be detected. I have had several coins that are suspect and it is always best to err on the side of caution. Your first coin has a nice obverse but the reverse is off...maybe two different engravers. The larger coin looks better but the flan isn't right.

Here is your first coin with an official Ticinum coin and you can see how the busts look different. The reverse also looks a bit less refined than Ticinum usually does...Genio is lacking grace and reminds me of Elaine from Seinfeld-- "I don't have grace, I don't want grace, I don't even say grace!"

I have a few unofficial folles that might pass casual inspection, except the last below; which has a decent obverse but the reverse is a mess...maybe two different engravers.

Still two of my favorites !

Disappointed no one commented on Max1 & Max2 !
Okay so here is the trick ..
Cross your eyes to make two images (1 2 3 4)
Now adjust focus/distance to bring images 2&3 together as one
It's maaaagic

All 4 of these coins were found by 'detectorist' in Normandy
The 'Ticinum' pretenders almost certainly came out of London
