I've seen plenty of coasters, but never something like this. The guy says it feels like plaster.

That would be a heck of a big drink coaster. Can't imagine what it's used for other than a wall decoration.

Easy. Buy a piece of 1x2 that's 8 feet long. Use the miter saw to cut it at 45 degrees into four pieces. Using your router table, cut two slots, one for the luan backer board and one for the glass. A little wood glue and Bob's your Uncle, a 2x2.
