Hey all. I've decided to start a separate thread for the journey with my Shield nickels. I was initially adding updates/progress to my Liberty nickel collection, but I am almost done with that. However, Shield nickels, I am not. They are housed in a Dansco album, which is album #6110. They are extremely hard to find so I was lucky when I found one for 40 dollars at my LCS. This will definitely be a more long term project, as finding Shield nickels without issues or minimal issues, especially for a good price, is quite difficult. They also aren't cheap either. Most of the coins I have have cost between 30-45 dollars. Here is what the collection looks like currently:

There are several coins that won't be coming to this album, since they cost thousands of dollars, particularly the "proof only" years which are 1877 and 1878. I really don't know why Dansco opted to include these in this album. That said, I figured I'd post some shots more in depth of the coins that I already do have. First year is the 1866. Two designs in 1867 "with Rays" Reverse Second which is "without Rays"

Next coin I have is the 1873 This is the "closed 3" variety, and can get quite expensive, which is why the one I have is a bit more worn 1873 Last one I have is 1883, which definitely needs an upgrade. This was my first Shield nickel purchase.

That's all I got for now I think this is definitely a cool series though. I really like the design, despite many people overlooking this series. I also think it's quite unique given the fact that I basically never see people doing sets of them.

Thanks, jbuck Do you recall seeing anyone on here attempt to do a Shield nickel business strike set like this before? I know there is one member who has a collection of proof Shield nickels that are graded. Must have cost thousands of dollars.

Nice collection. I like Shield nickels but I find it difficult to get them past 1869 because people drive the bids up to unreasonable prices.

Thank you. Yes, this is another qualm with Shield nickels. This is why I hunt around for the best prices I can find. I generally don't bid on them, but buy them straight up on ebay. Trying to find an 1871, which is a kind of semi key date, has been pretty difficult. The majority of the ones I have, I've bought through my LCS.

Me too, Marv65! I'd have to say, I think the Liberty nickel is probably my favorite nickel design, but Shield nickels are definitely up there as well.

That's a good start to an obscure group of collectable coins. Are there any other classical American coins other than Shields (2 ct, 3ct, 5ct) with no human or animal (commonly an eagle) on the design?
I'll mention that there is a 3ct series with a Liberty head.

Thanks, Dearborn and deadmunny. And I'm sure there is. I'm not an expert, though. I am aware of the 3 cent nickel pieces, and I quite like their design. I haven't opted to start a set of them though due to the expenses of them. Maybe one day, though. I love oddball coin series that aren't bullion.
