I had some Pennie's in books for pennies many different years.
Mostly the newer pennies 1980-2000 started corrosion at the edges? They were good examples.
The older pennies not so much?
They have been there many years not sure exactly, is this common?

Is there any information on Pennie's like are they staying in circulation?
Thnx

If the corrosion is on the Zinc core cents then that is pretty much expected - time to spend those.........Air reacts with the zinc if there are any breaks or even pinholes in the copper plating and starts the zinc to corrode.

To CCF! . I would just spend them, as there's nothing you can do to save them.

I think the file will show, the pennies show a distinct line around the edge where they contacted the paper in the book. As noted the earlier penny in book did not have this. Assuming it is the metal combinations used 80-2000+?

The coins pictured above were in a card board paper book & corroded at the edges.
The older coins pennies did not mostly before 1980.
Is this common, are paper books a safe haven if they are pennies?
This seems to of been moved & not seen.

Storage location is a factor. You want low humidity and stable temperature. Cardboard soaks up moisture which is eventually released back onto the coins.

These were stored for years & summers are quite humid.
Would it help to fit the paper cardboard books into plastic sealable bags I wonder?

From my experience with zinc cents, the main thing is to protect them from moisture. So, desiccant packets in an air-tight container may help for bulk storage. I've got around 25 pounds of zinc cents in an air-tight food storage container that I set aside from circulation as I found them in AU and BU condition decades ago. They still look as good as the days I hoarded them away. And there is no desiccant in the container, it's just air tight and hasn't been opened in years.

For zinc cents that are part of my collection, I put them in capsules. So far, that is working out just fine. Zinc cents are not doomed to zinc rot if they are properly housed.

Cardboard-based books that advertize as archival quality, such as Dansco and Intercept Shield also offer improved protection, assuming those books are housed where they are not exposed to high heat and humidity.
