I hope this is the right place to post this. I have just found and joined your community and am still learning to navigate the site. I have been collecting coins for 70 years now. Started when I was 6. I have also inherited my great aunt's and my wife's grandfather's collections. They were both avid collectors. What's great is they each had a different focus. So added to mine, there is an extensive collection that I need to catalogue. My collection of collections contains everything from large cents to gold type sets. I have no real idea of its actual value. It needs catalogued to even come close to a value. I have been hard at work organizing, labeling, and putting different collections into 19 Dansco Albums. Proofs and graded coins into Lighthouse binders, Proof and mint sets in black boxes. Everything loose in flips or snaps, labeled, and in red boxes, and rolls all housed in a nice blue box.so everything looks nice and neat and organized. Really, the hardest part is done, but the cataloguing will still be a large job.
I would like to record the normal things, date, mint, grade. Some I saw would value the coin for you. I think some would even grade for you. I am capable of grading my own coins, but sometimes a second opinion is nice. One of the biggest things I need is ease of use. I'm not the best at navigating a computer.
One of the biggest reasons I want to catalogue this collection is, I am getting on in years. The collection will end up with my twin grandkids. I want them to know what is there, and what it is worth if they ever need to sell.
I looked at a few different software offerings, but it's hard to tell anything by an online description. What are your thoughts and does anyone have a recommendation for a piece of software that they like?

I bought into CoinManage USA from Liberty Street Software years ago, and have paid for several upgrades to it.
Since you express some reservation with navigating software or sites, it may not be your cup of tea. And frankly it doesn't seem to be mine, either. Even though I've had it installed for years, I always seem to fall back to just cataloging on a simple, self designed spreadsheet. CoinManage does have a formidable learning curve when you're new to it.

But CoinManage is only $40-60, depending on which version you choose, and there is a trial version you can road test for free. It has some nice features. And they regularly post tutorials on YouTube to teach you tips & tricks.

This site gives opinions on seven different programs, and they like CoinManage:

I created my own using Excel & VBA.

I prefer the versatility of being able to customize things how I personally want them. Too many software suites today are overly cumbersome and lack the simplicity to manage large numbers of coins organized in a way an individual would like.

Even if you don't want to bother with basic programing, what's wrong with a simple formatted spreadsheet? You can create tabs for each denomination and easily sum quantities, years, valuations, &c.

I use the free alternative to Excel from LibreOffice. Just as capable as Excel, and it can even open Excel files.
Did I mention, it's free! :^)

I also use LibreOffice - highly recommend it.
