Eirinn go Brách, I'm retiring from acquiring! Please note my new temporary signature below about the upcoming sale (tomorrow!) of the Irish portion of my collection of early 19th-century British tokens.

Not until the catalog appeared last month for tomorrow's auction did I learn that the Iast time this Irish token appeared in public was at a 1934 Glendining's sale, where Francis Cokayne bought it into his vast holdings. In 1998 it was photographed for the Withers BCT catalog in Baldwin's basement, where it had been residing from the time of Cokayne's death in 1945, and where it remained until 2016, when Randy Weir cleared out the entire 19th-century section of Baldwin's Basement in one monster private-treaty transaction.

"Word of mouth" brought Randy and me together, and it was in that kind of bulk purchase, albeit much smaller, that this token moved into my collection the following year. No other specimens have ever been reported, before or since, leading to this closing in the lot description for tomorrow's sale: "...in all probability UNIQUE."

I guess we'll find out whether rarity can overcome the lack of eye appeal.

Ireland, "One Penny Token," [perhaps misleadingly] dated 1827. Withers 1946, the plate coin, 34mm, 14.55g, RRR.
