First off, I hope this worked, got a cell phone so now I can take pixs (I'll try my best with that) OK so if you remember a while back, I mentioned this cent that I received in change. Wondering what you all thought, is it a keeper? Also please make suggestions as to how/where I can improve my photos. Also look for my post on my ice cube tray clean-up of a large cent Edited by Greasy Fingers 04/23/2026 12:03 am

That's fantastic for a pocket change find! Certainly liberated from a collection. And, I'm trying to figure out coin photography, myself! Although, I don't own a smartphone.

Pretty fantastic to find in change. Pics are a little blurry - try to take the pictures from farther away the coins then crop the pictures. Can't really tell if that's mint luster or a cleaning - but with a mintage of about 6 million and if that is actually an AU58 then you did great!

Definitely seems to be a promising cent.
The minimum distance for most cell phone cameras to focus is 8-12". You will get a much better result taking a focused image from further away and then cropping the result.

due to the focus it hard to say if the surfaces are original.
AU53-55 area
photo tip:
1. if coin is in holder, remove coin from holder if possible
2. turn off flash
3. place coin on flat surface with indirect natural light. maybe a window sill in a cloudy day. or better yet use 2 sets of lighting, one on either side to cancel each other out and avoid shadowing or tissue to subdue the glare.
4. Use a black or white background to avoid any reflective color
5. move phone about 3in from coin
6. zoom in using your fingers until the coin comes into focus and fills the cameras view finder. if your phone has a portrait selection use that and then press and hold on the coin in the view finder to AF lock it
7. hold phone steady. if you cant then place something on either side of the coin (like books) at that distance and lay phone between them. this will hold it steady and allow you to zoom and take the photo without any blurring

Nice find! Quote: Also please make suggestions as to how/where I can improve my photos. I will add a step 8 to panzaldi's list: use a timer if you can, that way the subtle press of the button does not jiggle the phone.

WOW, appears to be woody! That's a semi-key in the series, only 6.1 million on earth. How sad that it ended up in circ.
Focus is poor but it looks to be at least AU50. I can't fully tell but the reverse may have been cleaned, it looks dull. TIP - Move the camera back some and allow it to auto focus. Then edit/crop down to just the coin so you have less background - helps with file size too. The white balance and light look fine, it's just the focus.

New pixs, thanks for the tips (might take a few posts for me to get it right) These are closer to how it looks in hand. I have a feeling it was cleaned at some time in its life, but I'm ok with that because hey I got it in change. Lighter portion of his hair is from the incomplete alloy mix. I put it at mid-au55 maybe 58 details. I see a VC treatment in its future (once I get more comfortable with the product) Again, Thanks to everyone with their responses. Wondering if I need to mess with the settings in/on the phone, it's just a Samsung Galaxy A16 5G (figured first phone start off low) I see my rev photo still needs some juicing, wheat lines are coming through as crisp and clean as they are...Thanks again everyone

Here's an interesting thread from the Search box on taking pics with a phone. It helped me out............ https://goccf.com/t/422658EDIT: And if your pics are a bit dark you can brighten them with your cameras picture edit function. I only have a Galaxy A11 but I imagine it's probably the same or close to the same as yours.

Thanks Marve.....It's baby steps for me with this phone, still haven't called or text anybody with it yet. Had it for about 2 or 3 weeks now, only bought it because I drove my old Mustang to work one sunny day and a darn Amazon driver back into it while parked. Luckly I was on break when it happened and a frequent guest snapped pictures for me.

way better photos. still need a tad more light. youre getting there
as for VC. just go for it. I agree with FC at AU50 and its amazing you found this in circulation. not sure about the surfaces. they are a little flat for a higher end coin. repost after VC and we will take a second look at it. if it would grade straight its around a $100 coin.at that grade
