Dear Valued Forum members,

I am in an interesting scenario where the attached 1881-S Morgan is claimed to be not geniune by an ebay buyer and he claims that the coin is made of brass though the weight is 26.7 grams and the coin disaplays beautiful luster typical for 1881-S and he is adament that someone took the time to fake this common 1881-S Morgan dollar meticulously including generating mint luster :-)

I am here seeking an unbiased opinion on this coin from the valued coin community members and the potential grade this coin can make if submitted to TPG which I think is a solid MS64. Would appreciate all your inputs and help!

Looks genuine to me, it even has the nick on the neck
and the date lines up with the denticles.
I will leave the grading to someone else but it does look
like a solid MS64, maybe higher.
I would certainly send in for grading even to just prove authenticity.

As stated the 1881 S is a common Morgan. There are a bunch of them listed on ebay. You could check sold listings on ebay for a MS63 or MS64. It is not worth sending in for grading in my opinion. There are known fake 1881 S Morgans. The example looks okay to me. If I had it I would either take it to a coin shop that had Sigma tester or do a ping test myself. Ping test is one method to check for authenticity. See Youtube channel SoundMoneyMetals about ping testing.

Looks good on my side, even appears to have push toning off the date towards the rim.

It looks genuine to me as well. You mentioned ( attached 1881-S Morgan is claimed to be not geniune by an ebay buyer) so are you the seller? if you are I would accept the return and just re-list it.
If not follow @JimmyD's advise.

Looks real to me. I'm thinking MS-64 for the grade.

Thank you so much for all the replies and I am happy that I did not lose my mind as I can not imagine anyone calling this Coin not genuine.

And coming to getting the coin back, I would have gladly done that but I am based in London and the buyer purchased it from Germany, paying international postage and custom duties and now accusing the coin is not genuine and forcing a return on me so ebay expects me to pay for all the original charges and the return international postage which costs me more than twice the cost of the coin....

The buyer claims, he did some conduction test and the results came back to be 26 which is not a value for silver and hence he claims the coin is brass and non genuine... I am really not sure what he is doing and if he is simply making up a reason to return the coin in my own expenses for his change of mind...

Ask the buyer to explain the test he did. It may not be a good way to test. If there's a coin shop near him ask if he'd take it there to get tested. If you must take the coin back, tell thy buyer you are going to have the coin tested with a report it's genuine and you will then ask ebay to get your return shipping costs back.

the photos are not the best here. the first two need more lighting and the last one has all kinds of reflection/shadows from overhead lighting so I'm going to refrain from grading it however, the coin looks genuine.

this is not a coin I would spend any $$ on having it authenticated unless the original buyer would agree to cover all fee's if it came back genuine as those costs could chew up most of the value of the coin as at best its a $125 coin if it was MS64

Looks genuine. Maybe the buyer was just looking for a way to get out of the deal.

Do not waste money sending this in for grading.
