I signed up for the Roman coin club and this is what I got for $19.99. I'm unfamiliar with what I'm looking at so I have to go with a reputable dealer.

Here is the copy that came with the coin...

Constantius II
A.D. 337-361
Bronze centenionaliz of Ancient Rome
Through military skill and devotion to duty, Constantius II (Son of Constantine the Great)became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. Skirmishes with the Persians, border raids by the barbarians and uprisings among the legions plagued his reign. The reverse of this bronze coin shows a Roman soldier advancing, spearing a fallen enemy on horseback. This motif is known as the fallen horseman.

Hey Empty_Pockets, good idea going with a trusted seller! That's a nice little LRB for the price.

So it looks like that club sends you a coin every month, is that the first one you have got?

This Constantinus II fallen horsemen is one of my favorite LRB coins, a nice big AE2.

Littleton has a general reputation for being "overpriced" (in the sense that you can usually find similar coins for sale elsewhere cheaper), and also for being somewhat awkward to get off their mailing list again should you decide to cease your "membership". There's also the fact that they send coins that happen to be lying about their shop, rather than sending coins you request that are of specific interest to you.

They do not, on the other hand, have a reputation for selling fakes, or anything else outright illegal. Though for ancients, I would always double-check any identification they send as I wouldn't necessarily trust their attribution skills. So they might - might - send you a coin that is genuine but mis-identified. Even highly experienced ancients dealers get identification wrong sometimes. In this particular case, their ID spiel does not seem inaccurate, and is refreshingly free from "hype", though it is perhaps lacking in some details a collector might be interested in. Such as the mintmark, for example. In this case, while a bit unclear from your pics and perhaps partly missing due to the crack, it appears to be BSIRM - Sirmium mint (in modern-day Serbia), second officina.

Would I recommend Littleton as a source for ancient coins? Not really, no - the cons outweigh the pros; I wouldn't recommend them as a source for modern coins, for much the same reasons. However, for those just starting out AND who do not yet have a network of good ancients dealers they can rely on, I suppose you could do worse.

Nice examples, both!

I had a run with Littleton's approval service when I was a teen in the early 80s. It was a decent way to fill Whitman folders with no LCS nearby. Eventually you "outgrow them" and yes, getting off their list is no joy. I finally got rid of them when we moved.
