I started a type collection of 1 ounce Gold Eagles and some gold coins such as the 2016 Centennial Set

I just picked up the 2006 set from APMEX and I would like to add the 2026 Enhanced Uncirculated Eagle to my collection

BUT I really don't want to pay the US Mints price which will probably be close to $1k over spot

APMEX has the 2026 Proofs starting at $7400 which is crazy, considering that you can still buy them from the US Mint for $5600

However the 2025 proofs are just about $200 over spot

Is the price reduction normal for Proofs or are we in an uncharted territory here because of the dual date significance of the 2026 Eagles?

I'm patient and would not mind waiting a year or two to get the 2026 but I also have concerns that it may go the route of the 2020 v75

Any advice on this would be appreciated

Gold and silver spot prices have risen sharply the last couple years with more up/down volitility than I've seen in a long time. Spot prices determine the cost more than anything, after that are mint premiums, dealer premiums and market demand. Nobody knows what future spot prices will be or what coins will be more/less popular with collectors. Historically there's not a lot of difference in prices with older proofs or BU unless it's low mintage, has special features like privy marks or have been graded MS70 compared to ungraded ones.
