I saw the 5-coin set folders the RCM just released and thought it was cool that, in addition to the commemorative Loonies, we were also getting some commemorative quarters (thought similar to the Vancouver 2010 ones). Then I noticed that even though they are "25 cents" coins, they have a diameter of 28mm and interrupted serrations. Why couldn't the Mint just make them normal 25-cent coins for circulation? I know the answer is to make money off them by making them special collector coins, but then why even bother calling them "25 cents"?

Yes, you hit the nail on the head - these pieces are meant for collectors and not daily circulation. It's not the first time the Mint struck over-sized 25-cent coins - the 2008 Anne of Green Gables and 2008 'Lest We Forget' WWII Annivesary quarters were 35 mm, for example.

I'm curious about the large 25c. They are the same diameter as toonies and they have interrupted reeding like toonies. Was a toonie collar die was used in the striking of these NCLT. Do they have 14 or 16 reeds? Were they made with $2 blanks without the centre punched out?
