Hello everyone.
I had a few State Quarters xrf tested which resulted in a manganese content varying between .35-.39%.
The pictured Tenn quarter was 71.27% copper, 28.37% nickel, .35% manganese.
The other two were Connecticut and SC, which reaukted similarly up to .39% manganese. I have a few more State Quarters with a similar subtle yellowish hue that I suspect would also result similarly. These were passed down to me in uncirculated rolls. Some weigh on the high end up to 5.95g, but most are around the standard at 5.7g.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I wasn't aware that standard State Quarters contained manganese.
Thanks in advance

Are you certain of the calibration of the XRF device?

I look forward to our experts views.

I assume so. I took them a place that advertises as a coin testing company which focuses mostly on testing for counterfeit/fakes. The xrf was a big tabletop one (not a little handheld).

Hey Chillbill,
I formally worked in the energy industry in the Q.C. and engineering dept. before my (early) retirement. We on occasion used XRF machines to check materials for compliance to specifications. So, I have no experience with inspecting coins, but on a more general note many materials can still fall into proper specification with trace amounts of other materials present. Looks like the manganese contents you site are on the order of 1/3rd of 1 percent. This minimal trace result is likely within spec. I doubt this is responsible for the color. Probably just toning. Just my take on it. Others may disagree.

and to the CCF

From Wikipedia........

Cupronickel or copper-nickel (CuNi) is an alloy of copper with nickel, usually along with small quantities of other metals added for strength, such as iron and manganese.
