Hello,

Does anyone know what causes this toning pattern? I've seen it on many grades. This one is PCGS 64 and is a good example. Nice coin, too.

I'm thinking this could be the .050 tin and .950 copper makeup on the surface of the coin reacted to environmental changes over the years. Copper making darker streaks and tin making lighter streaks Just my thought. Very nice coin indeed.

SVDB woody, nice example!

It's caused by poor mixing of the alloy. When they roll out the sheets, the little nugs get spread out. This will cause areas to tone differently from the rest of the coin.
