It's definitely a Copper Nickel Variety-1 but appears to be 1858? Could it be a pattern Type?

Hi,

With a reverse like that on an 1858 you either have a pattern J-208, J-209, or a J-210. I can't distinguish it from the damage done over time by viewing your photo. However, the J-208 is comprised of copper nickel. The J-209 is made of copper, and the J-210 is bronze. If you're sure yours is copper nickel, then you have the J-208 pattern for 1858. But it all depends if that's an 1858 or 1859 date. It's beat up....but maybe.

Awesome answer DoctorBurnzy, thank you so much!
While condition leaves certainty of date questionable its definitely a Copper Nickel coin. Perhaps a J-208 Pattern IHC.... perhaps not.

There was another thread for this topic a few years ago. I can add a few notes, but still can't make a determination as to whether this is 1858 or 1859 with a convenient mark to the 9.

The date on the 1858 patterns is flat, not rounded with the shape of the circular coin as seen in these images. Note the slight curvature in the 1859 dated coin.

I think I see a slight curve in the example posted, but can't be sure.

That last digit could be an 8, but it could also be a damaged 9. Seeing how the rest of the coin looks, there is just now way to really tell.

Cool coin and conversation piece, but I don't think there is any shot of getting it certified.

Also, I cannot tell if the posters coin is a rounded bust or pointed bust. Both variants exist in the J-208, but the pointed variety is very rare with just a handful known.

If it is a rounded bust and this can be confirmed, then odds are a J-208 as the 1859 regular issue had a pointed bust.
