PCGS graded this coin a STRAIGHT VF 20......what amazes me is that all the huge clear scratches and what I can only assume is environmental damage this coin graded out.....Any ideas why? It IS a rare date.....but If I had sent this in to NGC it would have graded out as Fine details Scratched , environmental damage AND cleaned I am sure. So what gives ?

i dont think they would have detailed it ED. they would have just took all that grime as just that. which I think it is. having only a minute to assess a coin they probably missed all the scratches. theres no doubt in my mind that someone attempted to clean this up as it was probably worse than this. maybe it was end of the day and just sent it through. its a pretty bad mess up imo. one reason why I dont slab.

I've only graded a few coins over the 60 years I collected. one was my 09S VDB as I wanted it authenticated. it came back genuine XF scratched. there is one tiny scratch on the obv field you cant even see in hand. I was ticked about that one.

That is Interesting example.
Are the reverse dark spots (looks like corrosion?) as pronounced as they look in the photo?

If I may, I have an example too, raw. Seems very similar minus the dark spots. Based on yours I would call mine VF20 as well.
