I have bought a 1966 proof set from Roxburys on ebay from a single photo of the reverse sides in the blue case, all are in petty good condition but when inspecting the obverse sides the 1cent coin has a horrible big spot of something on it. Can I soak it in acetone without (further) ruining the coin? Please help . Edited by crab eater 05/29/2026 03:25 am

That's a spot of corrosion that has leached out and has eaten into the metal surface - Sadly there is nothing that can be done for that coin.
EDIT: I'd get it out of there just in case...........

Agree with all above--an unfortunate development which acetone will not address.

Find another proof cent on ebay and replace it. At least it's not the 50 cents!

@crab eater: Sorry, that cent is badly corroded and cannot be returned to original condition. I agree with all of the above posts, especially about replacing it with another proof cent.

Thank you all for your replies to my question if it was salvageable or not. Will look to purchase a replacement 1 cent coin as the others are in excellent condition despite the fact that Roxburys sent me a different set than the listing photos provided on ebay. Have messaged them to give me the set in the listing photos. It could actually be worse than the one they sent me. A graded 1 cent proof 1966 @ PR69 is around $350. In no hurry to replace the coin, took me 7 years to purchase this set. Thanks again for your replies, much appreciated.
