Hello,
I was looking through my proof sets and came across this 1979 S Proof set. I know there are type 1 coins from 1979 proofs that have the squat, mushy "S" mint mark and type 2 have the more defined "S". However when I examine this set, it appears that the SBA and quarter have the block type 1 "S" and the remaining cent, half, dime and nickel have the more clearly defined type 2 "S". Is that a possibility? I thought the proof sets always came with either one or the other type on all 6 coins. I couldn't find anything to support a proof set with both types of mint marks. Any help on the topic would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the glare on the photos, it's hard to photograph the coins in the plastic case.

Does that set show any signs of being opened? That big fingerprint on the cent concerns me a bit.

possible that this set was assembled after it left the mint?

The set appears sealed and not opened. I do see the fingerprint also, so that is interesting. Do these proof sets generally contain both type 1 & 2 mint marks?

Ya know, I never looked at them that closely before, I may have to now.

Your assessment seems correct—the dollar and quarter have type 1 mint marks, and the remaining coins are type 2.

I don't see why the Mint couldn't mix them. They probably just pulled whatever coins were available from the bins to produce sets.

So, for starters, I know nothing about mint sets and surprised there has not been more input on this, as I know there are some here that are very familiar with mint sets that may be able to shed some light on this, not naming any names.... After doing some research, I am still not sure there were or not were not mixed sets but it is clear the type II is more scarce. Also the fact that one thing I read said the SBA dollar was the rarest of the type II and the way it was said makes me wonder if there were mixed set in the original GOV sets. A couple of links to read but nobody says straight out that there were or were not mixed sets Also a couple of bay links.
