I am not entirely sure how to diagnose this 1967 nickel. The rim is improperly formed, which would make sense for some form of misaligned strike. However, it is considerably thinner at both the top and bottom of the coin, and relatively thick on both sides. I cannot picture how to tilt the dies to produce this coin. Likewise, I don't think it can be explained by a tapered planchet. From the seller pictures, I thought perhaps there would be a railroad rim, but there does not appear to be any metal fins protruding horizontally from either coin face. I feel like I have seen images of similar coins before on Error Ref, but I can't remember the proper term, and a quick search was unsuccessful.

What do I have here?

Hmm that is a weird one. I was kinda thinking tapered planchet. Is the weight within mint specs?

Oops, forgot to post that. 5.06g, so 101% nominal. Completely within specs.

This is the closest thing I have found so far, maybe yours not being as extreme.

That's an odd one. A tapered planchet error should be underweight. A tilted die error should show finning at the compressed pole and weakness at the opposite pole. I would welcome the chance to study it up close.

As a guess I'd say its showing early stages of uneven spooning.
