Around 25 years or so ago I went to see 'Nick' (the Greek) back when the coin show circuit was practically the only option for a 'collector' of antiquities
Marlboro Massachusetts !
Funny how I can't remember what I ate at breakfast but a purchase made a quarter century ago isn't really a problem....
Go figure ?
Well Nick had this Ptolemy
No ticket no attribution no nothing
Just a 'heathy' pricetag !
Nick always gave me nice discounts
He knew I labored for my 'denarii'
But this one was a consignment and he had no freedom of action
Egad ! It was a weeks pay
The coin was less than pristine but still impressive nonetheless
I spent the whole day wandering that bourse hoping to be distracted by some attractive "thing"
Forgetaboutit
I gave in and counted out the Mr Franklins ...
So here goes nuttin
.Æ Octobol Ptolemy III Euergetes. 246-222 BC
Alexandria Series 4B
Horned head of Zeus-Ammon right wearing tainia with basileion
Rv Eagle with open wings standing left head right on thunderbolt
E between legs
47.5mm 99.32 grams
Svoronos 446
SNG Copenhagen 142
Reverse is a bit 'bunged' up but ...
Beggars can't be choosers
Eh ?
I had yet to find another as large !
But a quick google search just now showed me a CNG sale (107 grs !!) last year at $2250
Of course its nicer than mine but ....
Now add in the 22% buyers premium
Sales tax and insured shipping
Thats comes out around around $3,000 ! Holy Frijoles Ouch !
