American Numismatic Society - Jackie Robinson, the first Black player in the modern era of Major League Baseball, has been celebrated and honored since his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers seventy-five years ago. In this presentation, Sidney Carlson White (Assistant Curator, Jackie Robinson Foundation & Museum) will explore the history of the two commemorative coins minted in Robinson's honor in 1997, as well as other honors he received during and after his lifetime. As he does so, we will examine not only Robinson's achievements during his lifetime but also shed light on how he and his work are remembered in public. The story of the desegregation of baseball—and the debates over how it should be celebrated—remains a critical subject of discussion and commemoration to this day!
