Starting in 1968 Canadian half dollars were struck from 100% nickle with no silver content. They are smaller than the earlier silver coins, at 8.10 grams, with a diameter of 27.13 mm and thickness of 1.93 mm (the thickness was reduced to 1.90 mm in 1980). Nickle does not pick up a cameo effect well, so circulation strike or PL nickel half dollars exhibiting strong cameo effect are very unusual. From 1968 to 1985, all dates of Canadian half dollars are common, with only very high grade examples or unusual variations, having collectable value.

What would be considered high grade examples?I have been left so many different denominations of world coins dating from a 1693 french colonial coin to present and I dont know where to start to find out about these coins.
Thank you for the info on the canadian 50 cent piece.

You are welcome Ginny , to find out about the coins youve come to the right place.A lot of experts on hand everyday , I'm not one of them , I'm like you and came to learn , learn I did.I would recommend getting a few pictures and take it from there.
A high grade example will always be apparant from the others less so , absolutely no wear and every intended detail right there.

I would hazard a guess that most of the nickel dollars have a good chance of being found in high grades because the coin just does not circulate. You can try to make it circulate, but you know there is a good chance the recipient will just hoard it.

The 50cent pieces I hold are definitely in high grade condition as they appear to have never been in use. All markings are clearly visiable with no wear and still have their luster.
