Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6396 Posts	Posted 07/06/2009 2:07 pm I won this coin in a Stack's auction years ago and was not happy with its dark and streaky tone. Although it has solid AU detail my cost was only $60 which I expect reflects the reduced value due to negative eye appeal. I admit to having tried to "improve" it. I first soaked it in acetone which had no visible effect. I then dipped it in very dilute E-Z-Est coin cleaner, hoping to gradually lighten the tone. Surprisingly, that also seemed to have no effect. I'm tempted to try full-strength E-Z-Est but I wonder if anyone has another suggestion. An attractive and lustrous coin may be lurking under the tone! Report this Post to the Staff

There's a lot of difference in contrast between the darker and lighter areas of the coin; further dipping short of killing it all will only leave a blotchy appearance which would make the dip obvious. Unfortunately, I think the best course with this one is to live with what it is. Report this Post to the Staff
