Why does the US Mint charge so much for bags and rolls? A bag of 500 bison nickels would be equal to $25 but they are charging $49.95! What gives? And they charge $8.95 for 2 rolls of bison nickels but have a face value of a mere $4.00. I think it would be cheaper to look at your bank so you could get them at face but if your only lucky enough to find them at a bank.

The simple reason is because they know that collectors will pay that much for them. Many still believe that the quality coming from the mint is better than the quality from the bank. They also believe that "mint" wrapped is somehow better than bank wrapped. Now for those who live off of the beaten path, the mint is about the only alternative. Small banks usually don't order a lot of change from the Fed Banks, so the only way to get the new coins is to buy them from the mint.

I am really tempted to purchase the P&D bags because I doubt I will see very few of these in circulation. I don't know if banks carry the bags but if they did you get 2 for the price of 1!

Regular banks DO NOT buy coins in bags any longer. They get them from the local armored car company. You can however buy the bricks ($200) from just about any bank. I have been telling people for many years that they need to make a friend at the bank. Too many times I hear "My bank doesn't get this or that". If you know the head teller or whomever doing the ordering, and you make that person your very own special friend, you would be quite surprised at what you can get.
I deal with a handful of banks, and I am the very first person called when new coins arrive, any coin not seldom encountered, or any coin that might be an error. The tellers have my business card on their adding machines, and know that "something" nice will be left behind for them.

My advise at this time, DON'T EVEN THINK YOU WILL EVER GET ANY OF THESE AT A BANK, as most will not get them and if they do, believe me most folks at the banks know the score on these nickels and most will go out the back door. If you want to be guaranteed nickels, buy from the Mint! Next option, start bidding on ebay and hope you are lucky! Getting these in circulation would be like finding an oil well in your yard!!!

Not necessarily so on these Buffalo nickels... the bank here in Flint Lock Wy never even came close to seeing any of the 2004 nickels, but the bank has all kind of these Buffalo coins in stock and trying to get them out the door. They said their supplier told them they would make sure they had all they wanted as long as they were getting them circulated and out into the public. When you ask for a roll of nickels the teller comes back with "how many rolls would you like", bou that is sure good to hear. Of course they are all "D" mint.

I just ordered my herd of bison nickels on ebay! 10 rolls @ $3.95 each! The shipping is $3.50+$1.50 for each additional roll but if you buy 10 rolls or more as I did, the shipping is $12.50.

ND makes a very good point here. My bank doesn't have them yet, but when I called them, they said that they had just ordered some and wanted to know how many rolls I wanted them to set aside for me. They even offered to call when they came in. Having a friendly relationship with your bank can go a very long way.
