d23, I agree with you...., but for my own and different reasons... there are other signs.. WHY do you think the coin has been cleaned?

I do not know if the coin is cleaned or not (didn't refer to cleaning at all) Yes there are other factors and a bunch of red flags pop up. Another one is the surface area around the head as there appears to be pit marks (pot metal marks)which I have seen on other fake coins. Quick story - I bought a 25 coin in good faith and it turned out to be a fake, I got lucky in 2 ways, 1- I got my money back, 2- I learned a good lesson and was able to study that coin.

Wow this Topic is really interesting. I started a silver dollar collection months ago and I got 1935 to 1939 Ms63-ms64 ICCS certified already... now I'm looking for big key dates 1945 to 1948.
Any suggestion where should I buy those coin ? what I need to looking for ? any tips ?
Thanks a lot!

You might need 1 more post. I don't know if it increments when you get 50, or when you get past 50.

DVCollector, on page 1 the picture you submitted of the certified 1948 dollar by PCGS do you happen to recall what grade they graded it as? Tanks

brutuss, I've only sent one coin in to be authenticated in my life. It was a 1795 US cent which I bought from a very reputable dealer. I took it into my local coin shop for evaluation. The dealer put on his loupe and spotted some scratches in the field which he thought might be considered graffiti, and that I should send it to ANACS. Sure enough, it came back graffiti. It graded VF (a step higher than what I bought it at)and was authentic, but I was disappointed and sent it back for a refund.
Moral of the story: for a coin as valuable as a 1948 Canadian dollar, pay the man to get it graded and authenticated.

Very interesting topic! I'm almost considering putting my PCGS 1948 up here for "authentication"... Sad, sad day for the TPG's
