Hello, my brother recently purchased a note from a military show. The guy who sold it to him said it was obviously SS, and it was currency used in the Buchenwald concentration camp during world war 2. I couldn't find any information for him about it, history, or what it is worth. If you know any information about these notes, its greatly appreciated! Thanks, -Dillon Edited by Dillon 08/15/2009 1:05 pm

Yep, it's a canteen chit from Buchenwald for three Reichsmarks.

Wow very nice! It says SS ... scary... especially after watching der Untergang.
So who used these? The guards or the prisoners?

My understanding is that they were used by the staff.

see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buchen...tration_campCanteen chits are probably still in use in many military establishments: they are worthless "off-base"; and so they force the soldier to stay "on-base" for his diversions. This reduces absenteeism, and many other problems. Peter in Oz

Wow, that's interesting... My brother paid $30 for it, do you think that was a good deal? The guy told us that it is very rare to find something like that, and it is most likely the only time hed see a SS marked currency... Thanks!

Don't think that these Buchenwald "notes" are the only ones with the SS symbol. In "Money of the Terror" (in German), the authors list such issues for several places. A few sample pages from that book are here http://www.gietl-verlag.de/blaetter...og/index.php Don't collect paper money and don't have that book myself, but look at the table of contents (p. 11-15), and you will see a few.
