Quote: RARE KEY DATE!
DESTINED FOR THE TRUE COLLECTOR! I just don't care for this guys choice of words. He doesn't know what he is talking about. This is not a key date coin. The 1856 FEC is the key date. Although your coin looks very nice, it throws up red flags to me, not about it's authenticity, but rather, it's originality. Looks like it may have been cleaned at one time. Maybe it's just the lighting as well. Without having in hand, I'm not sure. We would love pictures once you get the coin to the CCF! It's good to be able to inspect the coin and return if dissatisfied. The coin looks to me a little below BU, but there's an interesting spin on this one. I think it's a variety--I'll see if I can find out the Snow #. My clue is the "S" in STATES.

Sorry, I didn't see the comments on the next page regarding Don's concerns. Here are the pictures from the auction.

Here's what I noticed on the FE: a broken wing tip, and the misshapen S in STATES. I've seen this variety before, but as I don't have a FE Snow attribution guide, I haven't found the number. I don't think this adds a premium to this coin.

Thank you all for your input. I'll let you know when I receive the coin. What does "Snow" stand for?

Rick Snow is the author that wrote the attribution guide for Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents, FE and IHC die varieties are designated as S numbers.

Thanks again.I'm trying to read and learn as much as I can. I live in a small town with no clubs or dealers,so this forum is a great resource to me.My interest is mostly in key/simi-key Indians,FE's,and Lincoln cents. I would like to buy a Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in MS64 or MS65 because they are so beautiful. What date would you guys recommend? I just started this hobby 2 weeks ago,so please excuse my ignorance. I apologize for butting in on your Morgan topic. Don

As with a lot of slop that's made in China these days, I'm going to call fake on this one. This is exactly why I don't buy things from ebay. I go to reputable dealers that have been in business for a long time. I may pay a little more, but at least I know what I'm getting is genuine,.

Don, There is no reason to fear ebay...you be aware and cautious. Red flags are things like 1) private auctions 2) bad pictures when the seller already has demonstrated that they can do good pictures, 3) many negative ratings, and be careful on high value coins...probably want to stay with slabbed coins there, unless you have gotten to know the seller. I can't tell you how many great deals I have made on ebay, sent them to PCGS, and gotten a favorable grade... Have I gotten junk on ebay? well of course! But I return it! Are there scammers on ebay...YES of course....are there scammers in real life?... This site is about EDUCATION...need I say more...educate yourself..it will save you time and money... ebay is great for many modern coins, proof sets, American eagles..many many items are priced right on ebay....have FUN~!
