Nice try Buffaloboy, I don't collect Buffalo nickels, that's why I'm not familiar with them. I'm just looking for a couple for my type set.

Have you done business with this dealer before? Just because it's not visible to his naked eye under his lighting conditions doesn't mean it won't be visible to your naked eye and your lighting conditions. Different light can change everything real quick. But if this is dealer you know and trust maybe it'll be alright.

Yes, you're right, I'll pass. For $50 I'm sure I can find another.

When I was reading the thread again only I realised that I hadn't mentioned the dealer. Sorry, my mistake!! I don't think its a fake and the price is not too good to be true, besides he has a sound return policy.

Is this how a dipped coin look like? I'm thinking about the area around the eye. Image: 34_1_b.jpg25.31 KB

It looks like maybe a lamination. There seems to be the same thing at the top of the neck, directly above the date.

Does lamination errors decrease the value of a coin?

I'm afraid there's no real answer for that. Some collectors, who know that it's a lamination might like it, others might not and others might not know what it is and shy away from it. Laminations are a distraction, as are a lot of errors. You have to like them to want them on a coin. And even then you don't have to have expensive or high grade coins to collect errors. If I liked laminations I really wouldn't see the need to pay a premium for a high grade coin when I can get the same thing on a circulated coin. But that's just me. Don't give up on looking for the Buffalo nickel that *you like.* You may have to pay more than you want for it, especially for a buffalo--It's a popular coin. Paying more is just a temporary annoyance. Buying a coin that has something that bothers you and keeps you looking at over and over is pure torture.
