Found this in one of the last boxes I searched. There is a slightly raised blob of metal above the left side of Monticello. What do you make of it? Die chip? Sorry for lousy pics.
Well the drop of solder theory is out the window! Today while roll searching I found another 1996P nickel with the exact same raised area on it! Any New ideas? May be a strange place for a die chip...what else could it be?
While I can't exclude a die dent or a die chip, the irregular, blobby shape is much more reminiscent of a die erosion pit. These usually develop in the field. They're usually associated with later die states, but they can form prematurely. These defects are sometimes called "blebs" (my term) or "patches" (Ken Potter's term).
