Hi , Now I'm just confused, the rim denticles count is correct but the lettering does'nt line up,is it a case of the bad photo creating an illusion of the lettering misalignment?

I had a look at the link and the fuzzy pictures seem to show a Calcutta reverse die. If I copy and paste the image and enlarge it the ALIA seems to line up where it should for a London reverse die. If Latman counted 174 denticles then that would also indicate the correct die.
It highlights the importance of good images for valuable coins becuase I would have bet it was a fake and it appears to be genuine. Cheers.

Okay, thanks very much for all the input and info,at the end of the day I'm glad I came here to find out the nitty gritty instead od going on the ebay boards shooting my mouth off and getting it wrong. Anyway while I was doing some research I came across this PROOF 1923 halfpenny, what a beauty.

The last one of those I remember selling went for a COOL 500K. I've got a genuine 1923 in good VF and am happy with that but a proof! Ahhh, we can dream. LOL.

Quote:instead od going on the ebay boards shooting my mouth off and getting it wrong Even if you get it wrong here, no one will put you down for it. We are all here to learn. That 1930 penny is a case in point. We all thought it was fake, judging from the pictures, yet it looks to be genuine when researched a little further. I would still like to see better pictures.

Well said Sean. I look at the ebay and even Oztion boards sometimes and they seem to me to be about in' an' fightin'. I much prefer these forums where you can learn or share experiences/knowledge without someone jumping on your case if you are wrong. As long as we acknowledge if we get it wrong then all is fine and we learn by the experience. Cheers and a happy new year to you all.

Yes that is great information, thanks Eric. I can read something over and over and eventually it does sink in but when it's shown to me in pictures and diagrams I find it much easier to retain the information. Cheers Peter. Oh,btw that proof 23 half is the one that sold for 500k.

I don't think there's any way I'll ever own one, but I do note that there is one up for sale at Downies next auction at the end of this month. It's listed as item #1766 ,Fine with a couple of obverse rim nicks and has an estimate of AU$15,000. A little out of my price range!

Hmmmm....price is ok for the grade, unfortunately for those 30's in low grade, there is really almost no capital growth prospects available.I have a few pattern florins and pennies and obviously the capital growth is there for them, but hey.....certainly would still be a nice coin to have that 30!.
