What are your thoughts on Littleton Proof Set Program? Should I try to get the proof sets myself or use their program or club?

I would not recommend it, Littleton prices tend to be quite high and you will probably spend twice what you would be able to get them for individually on the open market.

I, VERY briefly, considered their Sacajewea Proof & BU Set.....but even those prices were just too high from them. I don't " ebay"....so....will have to check some coin shops .....or maybe CCF sometime for putting that one together.

I'm not a fan of Littleton so I'm probably have a slanted view. My father built a huge coin collection using their program where they give you a free coin album and then send you regular monthly shipments to fill the album. When he died I went through is collection and he paid at least 2x for the coins in terms of market value he received and a lot of the coins were really poor examples.

In my experience, Littleton's prices are higher than you need to pay. You can find similar/better quality coins through several other venues (i.e. ebay, CCF/WINS, coin shops, shows, etc.). For me, having coins automatically show up each month "for my review" takes much of the excitement out of searching for what I need.

On a related note, has anyone had bad dealings with Proof.Max? Right now they have a run of quarter proofs from 1968 to 1998. The price is $53.99 and free shipping. I see singles all the time for about $1.50 but just getting all thirty at once seems like a time=money saver.
Thoughts?

Not all proofs are equal and buying in bulk or from a store like Littleton is not a good idea IMO. Take your time, only buy proofs you can hold and inspect in hand. In the end, you'll have a much nicer completed set.

I personally have dealt with proof max and I have had a couple of friends buy complete sets of proof cents from them and they have always been top notch with speedy delivery. -Recommended

Littleton is very expensive. You can probably get things for half as much on ebay. I have shopped at the proof.max store on ebay. Their proof quarter run 1968-98 is "buy it now" for $59.99.

I'd go ahead and enroll in the Proof Set Program directly from the US Mint for 2010 forward ... if you're looking for online stores, Proof Max, Vernon or Coins by Bobby are worth looking at ... the later can be found here: https://www.coinsbybobby.com

Litteton often great customer service, and they are easy to deal with. Unfortunately, they have very high prices, so you shouldn't buy anything from them. They are very successful, and have introduced many people to collecting, but most experienced collectors do not buy from them. You would do much better buying from a different place.

Hey BasicBob, search for Proof.Max on the Bay. They are an ebay store I think. I am amazed at their volume.
