I put two £20 notes into a slot machine in London on Monday to buy a train ticket that cost just under £22. I got nine £2 coins in change, as follows:

2000 - 1
2005 VE Day (St Paul's Cathedral) - 1
2006 - 2
2006 Brunel (Railway station roof) - 1
2007 - 1
2008 - 1
2009 - 1
2012 Dickens - 1 (that makes three I have found in change so far in total)

Slightly surprised to get no 1998s in change. I don't remember ever having so many £2 coins in my pocket at once!

But what was even more remarkable was that I got a 1989 Bill of Rights £2 in change in Newcastle last Friday, just a few days after a friend got one in change!

Awesome stuff - its amazing you got so many £2 coins, maybe that may explain why £2 coins are sometimes hard to find- they are jam packed in train ticket machines , interesting observation about the 1998 £2 coins ....St Pauls cathedral and Brunel £2 coins - seem easy to find for some reason ....

I guess you must be well pleased with getting that Bill of Rights £2 coin ! Have you kept all the Dickens £2 coins you got in change ? Was the one you got recently still shiny ?

No find of mine alas, but see this: http://www.theguardian.com/money/20...th-24-pounds

That's nearly 2½x rarer than the rarest of the Olympic sport 50ps, itself over 6x rarer than the commonest of them, and over 30x less numerous than the 1988 £1.

But still 3x commoner than Rio Olympic Handover £2.

And annoyingly they make a statement about it, which now increases the price massively because people with no interest are looking out for it.

I've got one in my collection, one spare and another has gone to a collector friend.

Yes - the one I just got was still about Uncirculated and shiny, but with the usual scuffing on the field either side of the Queen's portrait.

I got a BU Kew Gardens 50p in a bubble pack from The Royal Mint when they came out, but have never had one in change.

Anyone else noticed how the articles in today's Daily Mail and Guardian about the Kew Gardens 50p has affected prices (on ebay UK)? I listed one at 6.30 pm (UK time) today for 99p and it now stands at £132!

How many were produced that were in presentation packs? I can find the numbers for those released into the wild. Would love to know, I've seen the ones sealed in the origonal bags selling for a lot more than those loose. Got to love how it seems the news has caused a surge in value of the 50p Kew Gardens coin release almost five years ago, why now though?

According to The Royal Mint on their facebook page 300 000 Kew Gardens 50p coins were Uncircirculated coins in commemorative issue packs ....

I am also surprised this hit the news big time now , the number of those coins issued had been available on the mints website all these years. I guess not many people check mintage figures ......other commemorative coins with low mintages are also gradually going up in price as they are becoming hard to get in change

Odd you mention that as I got one in Newcastle a few weeks ago too.

Just found a near mint 1998 £2 coin in my change... Seems like more and more people are opening sets lately.

Have scored for a near UNC 2002 Scotland Commonwealth Games £2 and a 1999 rugby £2 over the past year or so.
Plus my favourite thing of all...a fake £2 coin, last week.

Just saw this ad - do we assume that all these coins will soon be in general circulation?
