Over the weekend I was helping out at a stall in an exhibition centre selling model railway items (helping my brother). I kept an eye on the takings and the pickings were very slim. I found only 1 'non-standard GB' coin - a 1998 Jersey £1. Didn't spot any obviously fake £1's either. Quite a few shiny 2013 'definitive' 50p, £1 and £2 coins but no commemorative £2'a apart from one beaten-up 1995 St Paul's Cathedral. The only interesting 50p's were 1 x 2011 Olympic (Swimming), 1 x Girl Guides, 1 x VC and 1 x 2013 with the Ironside coat-of-arms reverse. Considering the number of 50p coins I received in payment, I was surprised at the lack of commemoratives. Most things on the stall were priced in multiples of 50p so I didn't see that many low value coins, but among the few 5p and 10p coins I took, there were several 2014 10p's and the nickel-plated steel were definitely in the majority.

Interesting stuff I love getting beat up St Paul's Cathedral £2 ; yeah the situation you saw regarding commemorative 50p coins echoes what I have also seen , I guess their popularity has shot through the roof

The 10 cent coin from Singapore looked pretty much brand new.
The specs of the coin are: 19.41 mm diameter 1.40 mm thickness 2.83 g mass cupro-nickel coin
While our 5 pence coin specs are: 18.0 mm diameter 1.7 mm thickness 3.25 g mass
Coin was received in change from a small shop.

Perfect ! Interestingly enough I got an Abolition of the Slave trade & a Florence Nightingale £2 together from the self service checkout .... speaking of which , is it just me or does anyone else view going to self service checkout machine or vending machine almost the same as a someone playing a slot machine ? In both cases you play against the machine hoping to win a jackpot but a lot of the times you dont win but you still enjoy the thrill of engaging in the gamble in the vain hope of something big

Hi DaytR - I agree with you about the change machines! I find they often give £2 coins and a combination of 2p and 5p coins for some reason - never 50p's!
In the last 3 days I've had two Olympic 50p's in change (Boxing and Weightlifting) and a 2007 Abolition of Slavery £2!

.. and got a table-tennis Olympic 50p today! Amazing - hadn't seen any Olympic 50p's in circulation for ages, and then get three in the space of a few days!

Thats awesome news Rob ! Interestingly enough your good fortune with Olympics 50p coins has infected me ! .....I got an Olympics Rowing 50p at my favorite small supermarket , it was still a bit shiny which is quite amazing - I wonder if some people have dumped some Olympics 50p coins into circulation recently ..... Yeah , those self service machines never give out 50p coins and they also dont give out 10p coins so each time I want one of those I need to get served by a human

A WWF 50p landed in my hands today during a 50p hunt, still a bit shiny ... these may become hard to get as years go by. The reverse design is quite quirky

It's bizarre but on my last shopping trips this week I've had 4 1p coins and 3 2p coins in change (individually, from different stores) and the dates were as follows:
1p: 1973 1980 1981 1987 2p: 1971 1975 1981
All bronze - not a single steel coin!

Thats unusual Rob... The frequency of bronze and cupro has plummeted. Over the past week or so I have come across my first and only 2 Guinea £2's. Also a few Underground £2's and a 'Christianity in Mann' 50p, Also a first ! But what really caught my eye, mainly because it was a total fluke find, was this 50p Not entirely sure what's going on there to be fair, but I'm 99% certain it isn't post mint !!

Interesting stuff Rob - maybe thats why fewer 2 pence pieces have been minted recently, I suspect people have dumped some coins which were previously stuck in change boxes back into circulation , funny enough I am also seeing less bronze coins just like RED - but interestingly enough in the last 3 consecutive days I have got a 1986 penny in change from 3 different stores and the one I got most recently had a toning that suggests it has been in circulation since the mid to late 90`s ... RED, Well done ! You are the first person here to report getting the Golden Guinea £2 in circulation , was it BU ? I have only heard of a christianity in the Isle of Man 10p , do you have a picture of the 50p you found ? It sounds facsinating .

After Rob`s fascinating situation with bronze coins in change and our thoughts about their frequency in general, I set out on the case and what I found was interesting.....I made a trip to the self service machine after having made sure my change was going to be below 20p ....well it turns out my luck was in like the high tide at noon ! The machine had run out of 5p coins....... so it spat 9 2 pence pieces and out of that sample 4 were bronze , all them interestingly enough from the 1970`s, given how infrequently they come along ,today I was real glad to see those brown wonders....
