Quote: try putting your gold dollar into a carwash machine! They work just fine in the car wash I use as well as postal vending machines, light rail system ticket dispensers, and I have even seen them used in parking meters in high-priced areas. Quote: try carrying 1000 new gold dollars or simply 10 100 bills....what will you have in your pockets? Neither, it would be foolish to have $1000 in any liquid asset form on your person and that is a rather ridiculous analogy as small dollars are meant to be a substitute for a $1 bill, not a $100 bill I usually carry about ten small dollars in my pocket but I hate having $1 bills in my wallet because it is a tri-fold and they take up too much room. I would rather reserve my wallet space for $10s and $20s. As for someone not knowing who Benjamin Franklin was, one of the Founding Fathers of these great United States, that is a person that needs to be slapped upside their head with the largest history tome you can lay your hands on

A great deal of analogies are intended to be ridiculous, and the point of this one was not lost on me. Many times, when addressing a large and varied audience, exaggeration in analogy is the best way to deliver a point.
I was out in Kansas a few years ago, and found that many vending machines use coin dollars just as much as any other coin. Put a $20 bill in, push the Pepsi button, you get a Coke, 10 Sacs, and 9 Susans in return. This is the only area of the country that I have personally noticed this practice in however. I am sure that there are others though; just a matter of logistics.
The main purpose of the $1 coin is vending machines as far as the mint is concerned. Consider this: no Susans were minted for circulation from 1981-1998. The need for them to return in 1999 was a direct result of vending machines, not because folks wanted to carry a ballast load.
What economic purpose the half dollar serves is beyond my comprehension though.

Quote: push the Pepsi button, you get a Coke Sorry, that was my first reaction! Quote: What economic purpose the half dollar serves is beyond my comprehension though. It served a purpose before 1964. One half dollar took less room that two quarters. The Half Dollar's demise began in 1964 when Franklin was replaced by Kennedy. People hoarded them as special; not unlike those that mistakenly hoarded the bicentennial designs. This novelty would have eventually passed and the hoarding might have stopped, except the switch to clad coinage mistakenly allowed the half dollars to keep some silver. It did not take a genius to figure out that the silver values of these half dollars would eventually exceed face value. The hoarding continued. By the time they wised up and made the half dollar full Cu-Ni clad in 1971, the damage was done. People adapted to use two quarters and that persists to this day.

"push the Pepsi button, you get a Coke"
No mistake there. That is exactly what I meant. Happens to me more than I care to think about.
As for the half dollar coin, my reference was to the continued minting of such a white elephant.

Quote: As for the half dollar coin, my reference was to the continued minting of such a white elephant. Sorry, I did not mean to imply anything; just giving some background. I do agree that the half dollar is best left minted for collectors only.

"push the Pepsi button, you get a Coke " That's not a mistake...it's a blessing. Or course I would never puch the Pepsi button anyway... Sorry, I got a little off-topic

Quote: its not just coins, thanks to a forum member who sent me some 2 dollar bills, I decided to spend a few , tips at the truck stop( at the same table where I met this forum member) I left a two dollar bill, the waitress asked what it was for and if it was any good to spend.
I went from there to the counter at the mini mart, same establishment, the counter girl asked the manager if she could take the bills.
the manager knows me gave me a stinky eye and told her that the bills were good, to which the girl said where are they from?
I took my purchase and left the stinky eyed manager to explain it to her employee.
Exactly why I love the $2 bills. I took $200 with me on vacation a few years ago and had an absolute blast spending them. There's were definately some interesting times as mostly younger kids working had no idea they existed. LOL The kid at a Taco Bell was the funniest, I gave him 3 of them at the drive thru and he ran away. After about 5 minutes he came back with my change....I know he was asking the manager if they were real. FUN FUN FUN

Jbuck and schmidty, I always enjoy reading posts made by the both of you. Always either informative or entertaining.
I do want to make a confession though about the "No mistake there." quote: Actually, it 'was' a mistake. I typed it backwards, but was too lazy to change it (thinking that it would not make any difference to anyone anyway). I hate Pepsi !! I am a Coke addict. (You know what I mean).
As far as getting 'a little off topic' on this particular thread, I am all for it. I think that not only have we beaten this horse to death, we have been dining on it for a bit too long now. We just cannot do this with a horse like folks in North Dakota do with frozen seal meat.

Quote: I hate Pepsi ! I am a Coke addict. (You know what I mean). I will still bring you a Pepsi, but I will make it a Pepsi Throwback with real sugar in it. Oh no, I feel another conspiracy theory thread coming, this one revolving around corn syrup. Okay, back on topic!

Quote: Exactly why I love the $2 bills... I have brought this up before, but this is a thing we (Clemson Tigers) have been doing at the bowl games for years. I remember the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in 2004 (2003 football season). The Chick-fil-A sandwiches were $4 each, I bought one and paid with two two's. The lady behind the counter huffed at me, "I said FOUR dollars, not TWO!" I said, "Look again!" Fun times.

Quote: aladinslamp: Try putting your gold dollar into a car wash machine! See this thread! As many CCF members know very well , I wash my car every week, and I use only 26.5mm Dollar coins! I keep a coin tube of Dollars in my car console specifically for the car wash. It's much faster to load one coin than four (while the car wash clock is ticking down!), especially if you have gloves on. Almost all car wash machines in the greater Denver area take the Dollar coins, although I've found only a few car washes with 'bill changers' that dispense Dollar coins as change for notes. There is a car wash a couple of miles from my house where the 'bill changers' dispense ONLY Dollar coins, not Quarters! Here's a picture: Admittedly, many car washes in rural areas of Colorado still take only Quarters, so if I take a 'road trip' I might have to take some Quarters if I want to wash my car while I'm out on the road....

Dr. Pepper is now made by various local Coca-Cola bottling companies, including here in Denver, Colorado. This is a very recent change, it had been a 'Pepsi' product for decades. In fact, it's still stocked in the 'Pepsi' section of my local grocery store, despite now being clearly labeled as being made by "Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Denver, CO"
