I don't feel bad for the owner if he didn't take the proper steps to protect himself or his store. Having cameras that are out dated is an invitation for someone to come steal your inventory. All they need to do is see them and they will know what they can get away with. He will probably have issues with his insurance company as well now...
There is one shop about an hour from me that has an insane security system.. a full "Man Trap" security system.. When you enter the store the door closes and locks behind you and you find yourself in a steal cage the owner has to open with a switch behind the counter. The owner has 2 tv's one you can see and one he can see both showing the 2 camera angles he has on you.
There is another "Man Trap" when you leave the store so that people can not come in through the exit or bum rush the counter. Jerry also brandishes a .357 revolver. I asked about the security system and he said " This area was a really nice area when I opened up 30 years ago. Now it has the highest crime in the city. I was robbed 8 times in 6 months and my insurance rates went through the roof. I put in this system, and I have the lowest insurance rates of any coin shop in the state." he also told me that the system paid for itself in insurance savings and "0" robberies.. in about 2 years.
Since he put in the traps he had had "0" successful robberies and 2 guys that got stuck in his traps that were trying to rob him, he said, he went into the back, called the police, he left them in there, put on some old country music.. very loud(because he figured they would hate it), and waited for them to be arrested.
It is the most intricate system I've seen. But it works

as far as the ski mask thing, I think they should be outlawed. At least outlawed off the slopes. They are designed to keep you from getting wind burn. You don't get that walking down the street.

Yes, I would feel bad because it was unknowing on my part but this is also a person that took advantage of my 76 year old grandmother. A while back before I was interested in coins my grandmother had brought her deceased husband's platinum, gold, and silver bullion to sell to him. A few years after, I asked to see the coins she had and she told me all she had left was only a one ounce platinum Panda. She said she had sold a Set of Gold Pandas(about 1 and 3/4 oz's total) and the one silver Panda my grandfather had. There must have been a little magic done somewhere as my completely unknowing grandmother sold the platinum thinking it was silver.

The shop next to me has a buzz-in/buzz-out door with lots 'o guns(and a few swords) and cameras, in addition to scissor gates on the doors after hours and nice thick steel bars on the windows. The shop is not in a high crime area at all(one of the best zip codes in St. Louis city) but the security does deter robberies during and after business hours.

No security system is perfect. If there is merchandise sitting on a counter, it is at a higher risk of being stolen. Cameras don't have arms to grab and handcuff people, a few seconds is all it takes for someone to run in and out of a store with goods in their hands. Sadly, there are people out there that do this kind of nonsense full-time. It is illegal to carry and conceal firearms where I'm from, I personally wouldn't feel comfortable walking into a store where everyone is armed and not wearing a badge. Had I grown up with firearms, or owned one, I would probably feel differently. I don't believe people are safer when everyone arms themselves, but that is a topic for another forum.

Yeah, honestly I am of two minds about firearms in stores like that. It is a good idea in principal, but I can definitely envision scenarios where some innocent guy gets shot from an overzealous carrier. As to the ski mask thing, you must live in California or Texas or something, because around here there are days where you can get frostbite in a few minutes without one.

Ah yes I remember, was it from the sermon on the mount where Christ said "Blessed are the righteous bearers of arms for they shall kill with impunity."
I was brought up a Christian, though lapsed now, but one principle I do still adhere to is that it is wrong to take another life whatever the circumstances.

Thai-vic.. Here in America the 2nd amendment affords us the right to keep and bear arms. No one is allowed to kill with impunity. The 2nd amendment was written to make sure that if our government no longer had the will of the people in mind and caused death and suffering (the way the British did back when we declared our independence.). Then the people could rise up to defend themselves against their own government.
