I was shown a 1984 $1 coin today that had the obverse almost completely missing, ie. as though it had been worn down. But the reverse was a good strike, very detailed. My mate got this coin a long time ago, he couldn't remember exactly but it was from a source that always had new coins in change. What we want to know is if this coin is a genuine misstrike or could it have just been worn with sandpaper, etc? There are no scratches or such to suspect the later. Unfortunately I cannot get a picture, as I have neither a digicam or scanner. Any ideas would be great, thanks.

spd_dmn - Sorry missed the end of your post - Unfortunately with out a scan we would all be guessing what you might have... Weather a man made error (worth nothing) or a genuine rarity (worth I believe, a reasonable amount).

Okay, thanks anyway. Yeah, I'll have to get a scanner. Do you just use a regular scanner for coins?

spd_dmn - I'm certainly not a professional about is and far from it, but I have better success with a digital camera, although this is also hard for me to get right. But all of my pictures currently on this forum have been taken with a camera, I only use a scanner for notes!

If I remember correctly, a $1 coin should weigh 9.00 grams. If you can weigh it acurately, this might give you an idea if it has been worn down.
