I have found (for example) a 1970S Jefferson while roll searching. How do I tell if it is a business strike or a proof?

proofs generally have a mirror like finish, even after being in circulation for a little while. Also they will have a sharper strike. I usually check the steps and can usually tell. A proof will have well defined steps.

you'll know if it's a proof.....it will have better detail even if it is heavily worn.

Like stated above, a proof coin usually sticks out. If you're undecided on one, though, post a pic for us :)
