Wornslick Pillar of the Community United States 1304 Posts	Posted 02/20/2010 9:37 pm I was asked a question about gold coins today. I did not know the answer but I am sure someone here can tell me. The gold that is used to make coins, what caret is it? I have read about it being .900 fine gold so is that how the purity is set instead of carets? Thanks, Wornslick Report this Post to the Staff

No. Modern gold coins from the U.S. mint are .9999 fine or (24k), .9167 fine or (22k), and .900 fine or (21.6k). It varies by issue. Modern U.S. mint bullion coins are guaranteed to contain their full, assigned weight in gold regardless of fineness so the overall weight will vary.
