Spock's guess reminded me of a rule suggestion I've been meaning to make: 50 cent increments on guesses less than $20. Downside is person may not remember exactly what they paid for the coin...but it would make more room for guesses in the low price range.

What ya'll think?
How will we know it is less than $20? It could only apply to purchased coins, with a known price, and not auctions, which can always end with crazy bidding frenzy.

Since there is usually around 20 players, it might make sense. But part of the game is trying to determine if someone paid market, got a really good deal, or overpaid.

How about this:

If you host a round with your own coin then you may, at your own discretion, disclose if you paid less than $20. I will then allow half dollar increments. This will ONLY apply to rounds where the host made the purchase (no auctions) and made the declaration. Otherwise, the whole dollar amount rule applies.

Sound fair? We have time to think about it; I cannot imagine Moe paid less than $20 for that coin.

jbuck, I'm not suggesting any hints, or disclosure by the person hosting the round. Just that if you chose to make a guess for less than $20, you can put a 50 cent increment on the guess. If someone guesses $20.50, it is still rounded up to $21.

I humbly acquiesce to your very reasonable adjustment!

(Now if I can just remember the correct end time this time...)

Not to pooh-pooh new ideas, but I kind of like the whole dollar idea. It gives a choice advantage to the early guessers but the later guessers get to see a trend in voting but then have to take what's left available (of course they can fence out a lot of numbers from typical good-guessers! But it's all part of the fun!). It tends to even itself out between early and late guessers. I think we would lose that if we open it up to cent guesses.

Just IMO.

I guess I am not seeing the benefit. If one person guesses $20.50 and another guesses $21, then I could not round it.; the rules say that the (second) $21 guess is invalid.

So do I. It was instated to prevent the inevitable last minute $25.01 or $24.99 guess to undercut another guess. I can see where a $24.50 guess might do the same thing.

I'm not suggesting any change to the rules on guesses over $20. Spock guessed $67.67, and if someone came in a a few minutes later and guessed $68, you have the same collision.

The last time this happened, and it did before (although the non-whole dollar guess was the latter) I rounded the guess down when it should have been rounded up. Had there been no room to round up or down, I would have given them a chance to change their guess.

I try to adapt on the fly and keep the rules simple.

It does not always work that way, so I do appreciate the input.

Oh, thanks for doing this and doing such a great job!

Well, I'm not trying to make it complicated...just make more room on items that *may* be real cheap. I say "may" because recently the 50 cent rule would have allowed more people to crowd below the $20 mark, only to cause more of a surprise when the item actually ended up being almost $30. As it was, some folks felt they had no choice but to bid in the $19-$22 range, only to end up getting points for their "good" guess.
