Light won't damage a coin. There are types of bulbs which offer better color reproduction for photography, like OTT or GE Reveal bulbs (I use Reveals exclusively for photography).

I like the idea of a velvet pad. You could probably make one yourself. Understand, a nice MS coin doesn't *ever* want to touch *anything*, regardless of how soft it is, but a pad would be fine for circulated specimens. Another good idea is a pair of cotton gloves for you - fingerprints are darn difficult to remove from coins once there.

Standard cardboard stapled 2x2's are cheap and easy for all but really valuable specimens. I'm in the process of changing over to CoinEdge holders, which are cool because you can see the rim of the coin through them, but they're a little more expensive than 2x2's. Mine, for silver-dollar size, cost about 20 cents each.

Make sure it is not needed for the original purpose

You can pick up a cheap little gooseneck lamp at any Wal-mart, etc. Chances are Reveal bulbs will be easy to find (Home Depot has hundreds of them). I use the little 50w R20 floodlight type.

Cotton gloves should be found at any hobby store.

I got my CoinEdges from Brent Krueger (online) - I don't know if a brick and mortar store will carry them.

Lol thanks superdave I'll check my mortar and brick store for coin edges and thanks for the tip about reveal lightbulbs, do you think they sell cotton gloves at Walmart? And Bryan what kind of thing has a huge board of velvet that comes with it? And what would it's original purpose be?

Velvet pads for coins seem to work alright in the winter time, but all my coins prefer silk in the summer. You know you got to keep them happy or else they go bad!
If you can't find those cotton gloves, you can always try taping small wads of cotton to each finger tip. As they get dirty, you can easily change and discard the old wad.
Happy collecting.

I use an old cotton T-shirt to lay coins on, works just fine for circulated stuff. But you have to be sure all the soap is rinsed out of it. I also hit them with some compressed air.

You can make soft pads by going to a fabric store...they always have odd size scrap pieces that they sell cheap. Find a thick velvety fabric piece and staple it onto a piece of cardboard and voila! A velvet pad...cheap. You can also make nice display trays for coins and jewelry etc. I bought some rich thick royal blue fabric, wrapped it around a small cube shaped box and stapled it in firmly...instant display pad for a small item.
