This Mercury is definatly in the top five of "Hard to Photo" coins! The Date is what it is. The coin is evenly worn both Obv/Rev , That Starts heavy at the edge and lightens up on the way to the center. Though, I do see what appears to be a 'D', I'm unsure of the proper location for it if this really is a 1916. Man, what a bummer of a grade to have found it in! Its the thrill of the chase man. I know a few 'TopDog's" that may or may not be able to say. But, do and say what you can please. Then, I'll give you "The Rest of the Story"--------------Good-day!

Yes Sir! that is a 1916 Merc you got there. As for a "D" mint though, it is hard for me to call that one. I just ain't seeing it. I do hope you have a winner.

Well...I see about 4 different places that "could be" a D. I don't know how you'd be able to determine it for sure. Here's hoping for ya.

Here is an image of a real 1916-D Dime. The location of the mint mark would probably be crucial because there probably were few dies used that year for the Denver mint dimes.

It looks to have intentional damage to me. The skeptic in me, says someone was trying to wear it out to make it look like a 1916 D (Maybe Tiger Woods), which probably means it is not what you hope it is. The only way to know for sure is to send to ANACS and see if it comes back genuine. If any coin were worth the submission fee, it would be this one.

Hate to contribute bad news but every way I look at it it looks like an "S" to me. Hope I'm wrong!

I know mine is a little worn, but I like the looks of yours Coop! I'll trade you straight across? I think the same about sending this one in too. I also, from the same collection purchase this came from, is a better condition 1921 D! This hobby seems to keep you on the edge of your seat when you least expect! I'll keep you posted on this one as it transpires.

Joe: That coin isn't mine. I save images to help in a pinch to post to a subject. Probably several thousands for that coin. It's not only a 1916-D High grade, but a FSB also. Early die state. A very nice coin though. You never know when the right image will tell a different side to a story.

I don't know what I'm looking at on the reverse. Where is the mintmark supposed to be in that picture?
