Ok, here goes....
I walk in.....pretty big place--lots of coins.....foreign & US....just a whole plethora of coinage to look at ! I told "the guy" that I was the one who talked to him on the phone and explained what I was after. He said he had no recollection, which was fine. He then showed me the one Quarters Set he had and then said his wife would help me. He leaves the room to go in "the back" and I never saw him again. Well, "the wife" Knew absolutely nothing about coins and was "sighing" and "annoyed" every time I asked to see something. She would just look away and stare at the wall while I looked (and chose to buy) the several different items. She got REALLY ticked off when she couldn't find a dollar from the cash register to give me for my change, when I was leaving. Then when she finally found the "cash bag" to put more money in there, she just slapped the dollar into my hand and turned around and walked "to the back" without saying a word or even a "thank you". I said thank you, but she didn't even acknowledge it. I could overhear their "banter" between them in "the back"...and they were getting along quite fine....not arguing or anything. Very pleasant with each other. So.....for the short moments I got to observe "the guy" at the beginning.....he seemed like he couldn't care less to even show me his stuff.....even the stuff I asked about in particular.
I gotta say......I just left there feeling kind of annoyed and angry.....and sort of like I really didn't want to ever go back there again. My "coin disease" will certainly drive me back there.....I can't fight that.....but, let's just say that it wasn't the experience that I assumed I would have. I was caught off guard by the unprofessional uninterested un-businesslike behavior of both of them.
I understand that everybody can have a bad day......but "I'm" a businessman too and I know that I WOULD N.E.V.E.R. let a customer be treated a certain way, by me or anyone who works for me, no matter what kind of business I'm in...... EVER. You just don't do that.
So, for me, on one hand it was a beautiful experience being in a big room full of so many coins and choices.....versus.....upset and not wanting to give them ANY of my business again.
Granted, I only spent a total of $39.00 there......but every smart businessman knows that one of the not-so-secret keys to success is "repeat customers" !
So....there we go....

Hmmph. I'm amazed that ESPECIALLY in the current economy small businesses would treat people like crap with the risk of losing even more potential income. I personnally wouldn't go back, but I'm like that about spending my money. There are places I haven't been in for years and years due to poor experiences (Olive Garden, Target).

Problem is......there is only one other coin shop in town and this guy is "known" as a weirdo and a rip off artist by A LOT of people here in town. I've seen him at different coin auctions through the years......I've talked to him several times....I even bought a Silver Australian coin from his shop one time (and overpaid dearly for it)...it was a gift for my Niece, and I happened to be in the neighborhood. But the "overpriced" material isn't really at all why I won't go back there anymore---I view something like that as "buyer beware" at all times anyway, no matter where I find myself, so... that wasn't it......he's just known as a shyster and a rip off artist....and I don't want ANY coin THAT BAD ! I've talked to so many other people that know about this dude too....so.... So...which coin shop do I pick !! LoL ..... Coin auctions and Estate auctions remain my favorite places to pursue coins......

You almost have to wait for coin shows nearby. I'm in the same boat, I don't much care for the coin shops near me, one won't deal - "cost is what the sticker says"....and the other just smells like an old folks home and he doesn't rotate inventory at all, nothing ever changes. I buy supplies there - thats really about it. I look through his junk bin and once in a while pick up something if there is new stuff in it.
Flea markets can also pay off. I bought a BUNCH of Walking Libs all in AG-VG condition at $5.50 each about a month ago. All common dates, but only 11x face was too much to pass up. I only had $100 on me or I'd have bought more.

JB, your fast wizardry with computer technology astounds me sometimes ! .... Thank you ! And actually, I looked that one up after you posted, and it is the very one that I missed last year when PLS told me about it ! But, since it isn't until Fall....that's a lot of time in-between "coin urges" ! .......

eaglefoot,
I had a similar experience with my local dealer as far as them being uninterested, not taking me seriously, etc.... They knew I was new to coin collecting because of my dumb questions. But I would still buy some things hoping they would eventually take me serious. That didn't really change much so I pretty much only went in there buying supplies only as well.
Recently I went in with 4 high dollar coins (to me) and asked them for a second opinion on the grade. I told them that I just bought them last week (LOL), and casually mentioned that I had been looking for a 1909-S VDB, but couldn't find one in nice enough condition.
Guess how they treat me now.

..... yeah....well the ole "big spender" treatment still doesn't change my view on my first trip to this coin shop. To think that I can only receive honorable decent treatment if I'm going to spend thousands of dollars with them on my first trip in there is crazy ! And I didn't talk to this guy long enough to even ask a "dumb question" ! And his wife......well.....nevermind....LoL Like I said before.....I'm sure my "coin disease" will drive me back there soon enough.......maybe eventually I can strike up a more communicable relationship for the benefit of us both. He'll realize soon enough, that I can be a "cash cow" for him.....at least enough to pay part of the rent and light bill there ! ....

I agree, my opinion of them hasn't changed either. I still only buy supplies there.
The only thing I bluffed on was "last week". In reality I had bought them in the last month. But, I still felt better letting them know what could have been had they not treated me like that. I just wanted to let them know I was serious about buying coins whether it was them or not. Hopefully, they learned and will treat the next guy a little better.
I really liked how they undergraded the coins I brought in. It was as if they thought my next question was going to be "how much will you give me for them?".

Quote: "how much will you give me for them?". Which of course would always be way less than they're worth, because, as a business, they have to re-sell them for a profit. Coin shops would be the worse place to sell a coin !! IMHO (not that I've ever sold one!)
