JB, your fast wizardry with computer technology astounds me sometimes ! ....  Thank you ! And actually, I looked that one up after you posted, and it is the very one that I missed last year when PLS told me about it !  But, since it isn't until Fall....that's a lot of time in-between "coin urges" ! .......

I had a similar experience with my local dealer as far as them being uninterested, not taking me seriously, etc.... They knew I was new to coin collecting because of my dumb questions. But I would still buy some things hoping they would eventually take me serious. That didn't really change much so I pretty much only went in there buying supplies only as well.
Recently I went in with 4 high dollar coins (to me) and asked them for a second opinion on the grade. I told them that I just bought them last week (LOL), and casually mentioned that I had been looking for a 1909-S VDB, but couldn't find one in nice enough condition.
Guess how they treat me now.

..... yeah....well the ole "big spender" treatment still doesn't change my view on my first trip to this coin shop. To think that I can only receive honorable decent treatment if I'm going to spend thousands of dollars with them on my first trip in there is crazy ! And I didn't talk to this guy long enough to even ask a "dumb question" ! And his wife......well.....nevermind....LoL Like I said before.....I'm sure my "coin disease" will drive me back there soon enough.......maybe eventually I can strike up a more communicable relationship for the benefit of us both. He'll realize soon enough, that I can be a "cash cow" for him.....at least enough to pay part of the rent and light bill there ! .... |

I agree, my opinion of them hasn't changed either. I still only buy supplies there.
The only thing I bluffed on was "last week". In reality I had bought them in the last month. But, I still felt better letting them know what could have been had they not treated me like that. I just wanted to let them know I was serious about buying coins whether it was them or not. Hopefully, they learned and will treat the next guy a little better.
I really liked how they undergraded the coins I brought in. It was as if they thought my next question was going to be "how much will you give me for them?".

"how much will you give me for them?". Which of course would always be way less than they're worth, because, as a business, they have to re-sell them for a profit. Coin shops would be the worse place to sell a coin !! IMHO (not that I've ever sold one!) |

I'd agree - craigslist would even be better. Pawnshops worst, coinshops second, followed by parking lot at mall, bathroom at football stadium and in TSA checkpoint line at Philly airport. LOL.

There are a ton of coin shops in my area. Most of them have that "classy" feel when you walk in and the people look and act professionally enough. They just charge way too much and they don't seem too willing to deal unless you have several thousand dollars in your pocket. I've walked into a couple of shops that had the stereotypical old  knowitall behind the counter. I remember one time when I walked in to one of those places and the guy was yelling at someone over the phone. He seemed to be arguing with them about how worthless he thought their collection was. I inquired about a 1909 S-VDB. He scoffed at me, gave me a "don't waste my time youngin" look and showed me one in a custom holder that had a fine grading stamped on it and a price that was higher than it should have been even if it was fine. It was G at best. I just scoffed back, bought a roll of wheats and made sure to count the three bucks from the two thousand dollar wad of cash that I had in my pocket. Another place I found got off to a good start. The guys behind the counter were older guys, beers in hand, eager to help out and had silver and gold on hand (which is what I was after) for as close to spot as any other place that I've seen. They seemed nice enough. I even dropped a few hundred bucks on coins. The conversation quickly steered towards conspiracy theories and at that point they just wouldn't shut up. Finally I had to walk out in the middle of the conversation. They didn't seem to notice because they kept right on talking. I haven't been back. Luckily, there's a place right by my house that's great. The guy knows his stuff, isn't pushy, is always willing to answer questions and is very fair with his prices. |

Okay.....I went back to that coin shop recently. The guys wife wasn't there ! .... He was SUPER nice and SUPER helpful. He even took some lists from me and hand copied a lot of stuff I was looking for ! I had a pretty good conversation with him.....and he's going to be looking for stuff for me that he didn't have. He said to expect a call from him in the next two weeks. I think this will be a good thing now, and I'm glad I went back again. I bought a couple Silver Proof Sets from the mid-nineties while I was there too. ( for crackin' those Silver Kennedy's out of ! ...  )...(I think one was about $18.00 and the other like $16.00) Of course.....now that I'm "crackin'" fairly regularly....I'm going to have to find homes for the "remainder" coins.....Most obvious points for me were that I don't collect Modern Dimes....so, I guess I'll have to NOW ! I hadn't really put a lot of energy into ever worrying about EVERY denomination of coin in Ultra Modern......but with cracking Sets...the question now for me is...."Why would I NOT".... But then, that's presents AN ENORMOUS PROBLEM for me !! ..... Now I'll have A LOT OF "Ultra Modern" holes to fill ! ..... fun....yes.....but I fear expensive in it's entirety as well.....  I've not ever previously been a collector who bought Proof/Silver Proof Sets to crack.....put them all in their respective albums and then waited for the next Set to come out to crack, year after year after year after year after year. I've just not ever done this....so....to start doing it now seems like a daunting task. Now, for example, a mere "folder" of Jeffersons will not work anymore for me....not with Proofs and Uncirculated....and high grade Biz. Strikes to put in there ! And I've NEVER had a "Ultra Modern" collection of Dimes..... never wanted one....Now I'll have to "start" on those and play "catch up"...... .............OOOOOHHHHHH .........I'm gettin' DIZZY !! ..........  ....... ...... |

Eaglefoot I have had the same problem this past year. Started out breaking sets for the State Quarters. I have always had the Lincoln Cent album, so I was breaking for them too. Then saw a cheap Jefferson dansco, thought well since I have so many at home that I have broke out of sets .. why not. Then saw the cheap Washington Album .. same thing. Now I have a blank half dollar album and a Ike album on the way, I ordered them from Jake's last week. Funny how couple places I looked were "out of stock" on the Roosevelt dime album. So now I have been building a spreadsheet that has, cent through dollar, so I can tell which year sets I need most. Which ever set will fill the most holes. |

 ......yup......very similar. I'm currently hot on my Kennedy half Dansco ! I've only had it about two weeks or so. And once I've put all of my Silvers, Proofs, BU Biz. Strikes, and NIFC's in there.......I realized just how many holes were still left ! ...  So....I figure if I can purchase a couple Proof or Silver Proof Sets every couple few weeks, I'd be making some nice headway. With these Kennedys...there is a price issue on a couple of em'.....but that's fine...... VERY few complete Sets " don't" have that issue right ! ... But so yeah, upon doing this.....and now ending up with "extra" Sets or Sets I never had anyway, means that now I have to "house them properly". Which means more "albums" instead of the cheaper "folders" for "circulated" coins. Or just plum starting collection types that I never even really wanted ! I wish I could just stay focused on "one" denomination.....like my Kennedys for awhile....complete that......and keep it current.....then move on to the next coin type.....but I'm just all over the place, depending on which way the wind is blowing it seems ! .... I feel your pain ... I am right in the same boat. I ordered the blank half dollar Dansco. I am going to put only the SMS, clad proof and silver proof half dollars, from 1964 up. I think I have about half of the coins, from sets I have broke open. It is very hard for me to stay on one set and work on it. I think part of it is, I go to local coin shops and say I am working on Jefferson nickels .. I buy all that they have in the grades I want... then have to wait for them to get some new inventory. So end up working on something else. So I end up going from nickels to quarters .. to type set .. to Commemoratives.... And all the while trying to organize what I already have. Doing that I see how I have a lot of BU State Quarters in 2x2 and think .. I should do another Dansco P and D set .. it just never ends. Worst part is I will find a box of coins I have tucked away and find proof and mint sets that I had. Same years of ones that I bought the week before, to break open to fill Dansco albums ... For years I have bought stuff that I think is a good deal .. like last week I bought a 1981 mint set for $5.00 it has $4.82 face value in coins .. I just had to buy it .. Edit .. Almost all mint sets and proof sets from 1965 forward are less than $15.00 with a sizeable percentage being under $10.00. Most are priced below the original price charged by the US mint. Additionally many of the proof sets are valued at far more than the going price if broken out and submitted to a grading company. These are a really good investment right now.
Keep in mind a lot of these mint sets and proof sets are being cracked out for placement in books. This trend will only continue and more and more of these will be used for that purpose. Eventually the price should start to rise based on rarity factors for many sets simply because of the books that have been built. The coins in the books will tarnish over time making them less desirable. This should help create a strong floor on the price of these sets. Sincerely, John Leckrone

I start out with good intentions but once I enter the coin store my eyes glaze over and I am ready to buy. I got a few collections going at the same time, proof silver eagles, morgans, State Quarters, but I have made a promise to myself that I will finsh my Franklin collection. I've seen a lot of OGP's that have not protected the coins well at all. And I know that they certainly aren't airtight either and can be very susceptible to "the elements" too. Maybe for "album collectors", it should be standard operating procedure to put all of the albums in ziplock bags......or wrap with aluminum foil ......or something ...  The argument of "toning" being an acceptable/attractive condition of coins...... wouldn't be too cool with certain pricey Proof & Silver Proof coins tucked away in a nicely presented Dansco ! ....  Toning, over time, is guaranteed to happen with coins in an album, I know. But, like the 1998 Silver Matte Proof Finish Kennedy ! Once I spend the money for THAT one..... I'll be "danged" if I want any kind of "toning" (i.e. environmental damage) on this one 25 years from now ! ..... I guess I should just check and see how much my bank would charge me to move in there, next to the climate controlled vault. So, at least, if I lived there, I could look at my collections more easily ! |

I know a lot of people try to stick to one set at a time, but I find this hard to do. For example, I am working on a Lincoln Wheat cent set but can't help but look at everything else in the local coin shop and antique shops. I may go in there looking for pennies, but then Ill see something else, say a really nice grade Morgan or walking liberty or merc dime that's at a really good price and think to myself, I should get it now cause it may not be there once I start that set.. So I end up just getting everything. Problem is, this thins out my LWC budget LOL. |
