I have a roll of 1939 D nickels in a very tough translucent (almost transparent) plastic tube. I can get the lid off and look at the top coin, but I can't figure out how to get coins out short of using a saw and damaging all the coins. They're in there really tight, and they've been in there for decades. Any idea how to go about getting them out? There is no indication on the outside what the quality is inside, and there might be some nice ones in there.

Diane,
You might try running very hot water over the outside of the tube for a couple minutes, this should expand the plastic a little. Maybe enough to release the coins.

I have also just turned the tube unside down and pounded it a few times on a table. Heating the tube with hot water should also loosen things up a bit but should that fail I would consider a swift hit (not to hard) on the bottom edge of the tube to crack it. After that you should be able to pry the darn thing apart. Good luck and do let us know what works and how things turn out!

I had a similar problem I ended up using a dremmel. I only dammaged the bottom coin. I tried hot water and hitting the tube fairly hard. I also tried it in the oven at 250deg for a few minutes. Nothing seemed to work so I cut a couple of notches in the tube and pealed the tube off the coins with a pair of needle nosed pliers. I was a little frustrated at the time so Cut the first coin a littl with the dremmel while making the notches. I think if I had been a little calmer I would have been able to do it without dammaging any of the coins.

Go to your local Wal-mart and buy a spray bottle of "Liquid Coin Tube Remover".

But seriously, try this. Get an unsharpened pencil with eraser removed, or a wooden dowel with a diameter about 1/2 of the tube diameter. Turn the tube upside down, and gently rap on the dowel with a hammer. This should break a hole in the bottom of the tube. Then you should be able to push the coins out with the dowel or pencil, and not hurt a single coin.....

MM

And, please, wear some safety glasses, the tube could shatter.

We ended up doing the same thing as Nohope. We had about 25 tubes that we couldn't get the coins out of. Fortunately, they were not rare dates and only the end coin got ruined.
