I have several of those Mint report nickels and it's been driving me nuts that they are encased in that bubble of resin or whatever it is. I would like at least one of them to join my nickel collection in a normal capsule like the others.
Is there a safe easy way to remove this plastic crap? Is it the same as what's on those carded quarters that they sell? I could experiment on one of those...
Suggestions? Ideas?

Maybe shoot Colonial Acres an email and ask them how they got theirs out. I saw them "free" in the nickel book. Cheers

I boiled mine. Eventually both sides pealed off. The obverse came off first. The reverse was more difficult and I had to help out a bit.

Don't forget a picture when you get it out.

Good idea... I think I might go with distilled water steam. Now I have to fire up the still and make some.

For me, the reason I took the coin out was because I noticed odd details, particularly on the top part and around the "CA". I wasn't sure if the aberration was caused by some kind of imprint within the resin. Turns out the coin was struck that way.

Wow! That is a big error for a collector coin. What's the other side look like?

The obverse is flawless.

I don't collect the collector nickels (yet?!?), but that is one nice looking nickel. It is interesting to see such an obvious error for that class of coin. It must be rare. Hopefully Ugly will post pics of his "free" coin as well. Cheers

Can anyone give me information on collector nickles? It's referred above as a mint report nickle - do I have to buy the reports to get them?
