Need someone to guide me along on how to tell the difference between a Type 1 and a Type 2 on an SBA dollar. Were both types only limited to 1979 and 1980? Are they found only in circulated or in Proofs also. Images would be best.

Thanks in advance

1979 and 1981 proofs are the type 1&2 to distinguish. The Red Book has some decent pictures for reference. Basically the 79S type 1 are like a completely filled mintmark, the type 2 is somewhat open. The 81 type 1 is just like the 79 type 2 and the actual 81 type 2 is clearly open with a wider sweeping curves and a flat upper surface. hope that helps. nlp

I agree with nlp.

This is a pretty good web page.

The 79 is pretty easy to distinguish. Blob or no blob.

The 81 is a bit harder. On the 81 the large bulbous serifs of a Type 2 are the key.

the easiest way to distinguish difference is...

every 81 type 2 mint mark is CAMEO/frosted. in 1982 I bought 5 complete sets of 81 T-2 from a dealer for $8 ea,plus many incomplete sets and single coins for next to nothing from different dealers.at the time not many people knew how to distinguish the difference b/t type 1 and type 2.

Thanks again guys. Wife brought home 8 SBA's from the bank and 2 were 79's but they both look type1. Lot of marks on them. Have a few already. Will throw them in the "Everything goes in here box". Everything in the box is in an Air-Tite direct holder. Bought a box of 150 mixed Air-Tite direct holders from a guy at a coin show for $10.00. Some were used but was still a good bargain.

Business strike S mint SBAs are Type 1 only. Type 1 and 2 mintmarks are found on proofs.

I noticed that the "79-S" Jefferson proofs as well as the "81-S" had the same issues with the filled S or clear S, must of been a problem with the dies that year at the mint.Is there any other coin of that year had the same issue?

All of the 1979-S and 1981-S proof denominations have either a Type 1 or a Type 2 mintmark, the mintmark punches were switched out during the year which created the two varieties. The SBAs just happen to be the most valuable so they get the most attention. The 1979-S Type 2 is also the same mintmark as the 1981-S Type 1.
