I would! S-mints are worth 2 to 3 times face in average condition. I would think rolls of s-mints will always have a slight premium.

I am yet another copper hoarder. I don't have near as much as some of the guys on this forum, but I'm guessing, if put into ice cream pails, I would fill 1 and 1/2. I would really like to sell them for more than 1.5 cents, but the chances aren't great. Sometime when I have the time I will probably roll them also. Oh, and yes, I do take out the AU/Bu's and seperate the wheats and indians (no indians to seperate yet) apart from the copper.

do you still sort out the S mint marks even if they are not BU? I'm wondering if I should start to do that regardless of condition?

SDcoinguy, I do. A few months back, I was able to sell off some at a slight profit, and I've already managed to roll up another 1/2 a box.

Mintage numbers lead me to say yes! A full roll of mixed condition s-mints would do well in the future IMO.

One further note, I don't think you will "get rich" from coppers. Most "hoarders" of any metal are looking at copper, silver, gold, etc as an investment in security.

With copper pennies, you have a bullion coin that, right now, is worth more as bullion than as currency. And there is a safety net, as it is currency, it will never be less than a penny.

I have bought boxes, and kept the coppers, but not very often. I do save every copper than naturally passes into my hands. All of it is kept in .... Copper jugs that I have!

P.s. People are also holding onto their nickels for their bullion value (75% nickel and 25% copper in the U.S.). Realcent also has a section on this and I have read articles on this outside of that forum). I don't buy boxes of nickel (I have to draw the line somewhere).

As was echoed by the second or 3rd poster - I CANNOT believe you can't find threads on hoarding copper pennies.

Hoard them and wait until next week for the new thread to pop up about "Is saving pre-1982 Lincolns worth it"......

Why are there so many threads? Because there is no answer.

Are you a Penny-Pincher or no? That's what it boils down to.

when I was on the force, local contractors would come to us asking us if we wanted to make extra money (off duty) watching over their newly constructed homes. People would come by and rob the copper out of them. It was very profitable and easy...lol...

I save all my copper pennies, cant hurt...

Let's not forget about the popularity of the Lincoln Cent either.

case in point... the 1909-S VDB...

Less than 1/2 million minted...and one of the most sought after coins in any condition.

Yesterday, I paid $66 for a 1800 1/2 cent. RedBook lists the mintage of this coin at 202,908.

Keeping S-mint Memorials makes good "cents" IMHO

I have average of 12-15 wheaties in a box but only around 6-8 S-mint memorials, so I keep all of them. It cost me only 1c a coin so I can't go wrong with it.
