I think you'd do better by getting using the time to get a part time job and saving up to buy key date coins. Don't get me wrong, I'm hoarding wheaties, but only because I like the coin, not for the copper value. One day I may be on that hoarders showing being dug out of wheaties. I've only got $4 worth right now, so there's a way to go!

I don't hoard Coppers......like others have said..."I do hoard Wheats though". I used to keep every "S" mint regardless of condition too.....but the novelty has since worn off on that for me......now I just wait for the better conditioned ones (which I don't find all that often). I hoard Wheats because I like the design.....they're collectible and interesting.....they're worth more than face....and depending on the date/mintmark, MUCH more than face. But it is a just a little bit of a different perspective for me. Once I have my albums/folders filled, I look at them as a "hoard collection"....sort of/kinda. I mean, I have huge airtight containers full of segregated bags of Wheaties...... AND I LIKE IT ! The more the better ! There's just something valuable to "me" as a collector to have Wheaties "IN BULK"......I don't know exactly why, but it just "is". But, in regards to this topic.....I've just never been able to look at pre-82 Coppers like that, even though the theories are very similar. But I don't hoard "junk silver" either so.....I certainly have a good amount of it....but don't "hoard it", like I would or do Wheats. So, for me, it's the same in ways, but also very different in ways....a Copper Cent is not necessarily a Wheat, but a Wheat is certainly a Copper coin ! So, saving one but not the other....umm.........Okay....I'm confusing myself now !......I'll be over here in the corner if anybody needs me.. ....Ha Ha

I've been hanging onto coppers for about 3 years now and I have about 6 of the old Army cartridge cases full of them. I don't expect to retire on them, but it's fun. The Wheats get separated into rolls & put aside. Have about 100 rolls of assorted dates so far. I'll keep looking because one of these days the government will get smart and stop making them. At that point, maybe we'll be able to make a bit of money on these.

Just for fun, I decided to keep track of the S mints from my last $25 box.
3 wheats... 45, 51, and 53.
Memorials:
2-1968 10-1969 8-1970 10-1971 7-1972 5-1973 2-1974
That's an average box for me. I usually find a few more wheats though.

i just opened my first $25 box today. it was so exciting I opened the whole thing. I got 9 wheats. I also did get about 30 s mint mark pennies from about 1970 to 1974. probably cause I live in san diego which is close to San francisco. anyways I'm also setting aside coppers and '09 + '10 pennies cause they have low mintage and look great. had several pennies from '59 to '69, I just threw them with coppers cause there were many.

Well I dont think your gonna get rich , but you can make a few bucks . I sort through cent rolls, looking for wheats ,varities and errors. It does not take much effort to drop the coppers in one bucket and the zincs in another. Right now on ebay copper cent auctions of 50 face or 5000 cents are selling between 75$ and 89$ +/- a few dollars ,depending on if buyer or seller pays shipping. To ship 50 in face semes to cost around $10-12 for a flat rate box. So the seller can sell at 1.4 - 1.7 cents per coin or .4 - .7 profit on everage I hand sort around 10 rolls a night before going to bed, it is relaxing and help me wind down. so at the end of the month if I have $50 in face copper and make 25-30 bucks what the heck its still $25-30 bucks . I buy from one bank , and dump at another with a free coin counter up to 100$ a day no charge

Would I get any buyers here if I split them into solid date average circulated rolls?

penny man, you have a while before you can sell on here (see rules) but who knows the answer to that. I sell my coppers on ebay at an average of 1.8 cents per coin.Larger lots sell best for me ($100 FV)

I prefer to hoard stuff with numismatic value. I've been buying up Mint State 55-S penny rolls since the mintage on that year and date was much lower than most wheat cents. I suspect I'll do much better on those than copper hoard people particularly once the MS-64 and MS-65 examples shoot up in value (i.e. become worth slabbing).

It never occurred to me to separate my Lincoln's,I just throw them into containers and add to them, roll them or put them into albums as needed.I guess you might call me a hoarder because I have a whole passel of them.I roll the ones from 85 on and bring them to a bank once a year. Some day soon I hope the Gov. will stop making them.
Wheaties I like, they have style + class,58-83 ok but after that Lincoln coins, well down hill from there.I guess maybe now I should search out the better copper coins and set them aside.A penny saved is a dollar earned at todays prices. gasman96
