so, maine, you must be the guy I've got on my watch lists on ebay. I've been thinking of getting into it for sure, but I think i'd need to get a mechanical sorter to make it faster. do you do it all by hand or what?

So Maine I'm not,Conn. born Yankee,Rebel at Heart I am.I haven't sorted my coins in a long while now but when I do it's going to be a big job as I store them in air tight canning jars filled with olive oil.Strange I know, but they sure look great lined up on the shelf.I did open a bottle that was put up in 1949,washed and dried them,so far they look ok

Age has caught up on me,my eyes have trouble reading dates so using a mag glass is necessary and time consuming after sorting for dates I'll roll by hand. gasman96

oblaka, I search bags of cents for good stuff and thought I may as well put the coppers off to one side...not a bad profit for something I already do. I wouldn't even consider searching soley for copper pennies though...way too many hours involved. And I ship them in bags...too much time to roll !

gasman96, I think you misread Oblaka's post

johnstac:

I've been hoarding copper cents about 18 months now. So far I've got about 23000. After awhile, I started to save BU coins of all years, (including the zinc 83's and newer). Then I discovered there were all kinds of RPM's, errors, double dies and so forth out there. So I kept accumulating more reasons to search through Lincoln Cent rolls.

None of these coins will ever be rare, (except some of the errors), but it doesn't mean they can't go up in value... Since I have discovered this forum, I have become convinced that some of the best "finds" may be the zinc coins 83 and newer in MS63+. These coins turn to garbage MUCH quicker than copper cents.

Wheat cents, copper cents, errors and varieties, conditional rarities, and the one year 2009 type set. In my view - there are plenty of reasons to search through penny rolls. For me it's the coppers that make it doable, as I would not spend the hours, without the confirmation at least 18 - 20% of the time, that I'm finding something of more than face value.

I believe the Lincoln Cent, and the ban against melting are both gone before the decade is thru...

A Million Pennies!?!

I have recently, as in the last two days, begun sorting out all pre 1981 pennies
while searching rolls for wheats. I'm averaging 11 pre 1981 pennies per roll at the moment
but have a feeling that number will get lower the more I search. I would love for them to payoff
one day, however, for now, I'm just doing it because every one else is All of you guys can't be wrong can you? haha

I, too "hoard" lincolns. I just look through whatever change Ihave at the end of the day and seperate copper and zinc.

If you're getting it for face value, why not?

A couple years back I went to a yard sale that some family was having as their father or grandfather had just passed and they had a huge box full of rolled coin. I was looking through and they had rolls upon rolls of wheat pennies and wanted .60 a roll. Needless to say I purchased every roll they had, I believe it was $40 worth so 80 rolls. I made out real good considering what they sell for on auction sites. I also made out real well on dates, mm's considering they were truly unsearched. I still roll hunt cents all the time and just over last weekend picked up 20 rolls from the bank and found about 60 wheats out of those rolls. And a lot of non wheat coppers.

60 wheats from 20 rolls? where the heck do you live? I average 7 wheats per 50 rolls, so what you have there is incredible.

If you can get copper pennies at face, I say buy them all day long. As ebay sales show, you're getting at least 1.3x face in scrap brass just don't be under any illusion that you're getting 3 pennies worth of value for a penny. That's not how the scrap market works particularly w/r to coins since it is not legal to melt them down.

fenton, my copper sales average 1.7 x face value on ebay which I would say is average for somebody that knows how to sell them.Take a look at the larger lots and you'll see what I mean.It doesn't become cost effective to ship them until you have $100 FV.

murrellington the only thing I can think of is someone needed money and cashed in some of their collection. That was an unusually high amount for me. I usually get 1 every two rolls or so. That's been my normal average for the last few years.
